Chúng ta cùng ôn lại những cụm từ từ ngày 18/9/2018 đến 28/9/2018 để làm bài test cuối tuần nha ^^
- talk sb into sth = persuade sb to do sth
............ out of sth = persuade sb not to do sth
- the advent of sb/sth: the coming of an important event, person, invention, etc.
- out and about:
+ able to go outside again after an illness
+ traveling around a place
- put up with sb/sth: = tolerate sb/sth doing/being/have sth: to allow somebody to do something that you do not agree with or like.
- capable of (doing) sth: having the ability or qualities necessary for doing something.
- on the bank of: ở bờ của... (sông, kênh...)
- finish sth ↔ off: to do the last part of something; to make something end by doing one last thing.
- be/ get caught up sth: bị vướng vào điều gì mình không mong muốn.
- put sth across: diễn đạt, sắp đặt.
- access (to sth): truy cập vào...
- blame sth on sb/sth: khiển trách = blame sb/sth (for sth)
- from time to time = occasionally but not regularly. (sometimes but not often)
- make a reservation = book in advance: đặt trước, giữ chỗ trước.
IN ADVANCE (OF STH):
+ before the time that is expected; before something happens.
+ more developed than somebody/something else (đi trước thời đại in advance of the age, tiến bộ)
- look into sth: to examine something.
- the tip of the iceberg: only a small part of a much larger problem.
- criticize sb/sth (for sth): phê bình, chê bai >< praise sb/sth (for (doing) sth)
- drawback (of/ to (doing) sth): mặt trái/ nhược điểm của...
- as of: kể từ...
also as from (BrE)
- dry out | dry sth ↔ out: to become or to allow something to become dry, in a way that is not wanted.
- the pros and cons: advantages and disadvantages.
+) weigh up the pros and cons (= consider the advantages and disadvantages of something).
- hold the fort: (BrE, informal): to have the responsibility for something or care of somebody while other people are away or out.
(NAmE: hold down the fort)
- carry on sb/sth (to do/ doing sth): to trust somebody to do something or to be sure that something will happen (= rely on, bank on).
- do the math: suy tính kĩ càng.
- safe and sound: bình an vô sự (sau một sự việc nào)
*alive and kicking: khỏe mạnh và năng động (tình trạng sức khỏe)
- be comprised/ composed of = consist of: bao gồm.
The group consists of/ comprises/ is made up of/ is composed of ten people.
Ten people make up/ constitute/ comprise the group.
- carry sth ↔ out: thi hành, tiến hành một nhiệm vụ.
- in behalf of sb/ in sb's behalf (US English): in order to help somebody
*nghĩa của nó cũng có thể là "thay mặt ai đó"
on behalf of sb/ on sb's behalf cũng có hai nghĩa tương tự, nhưng nó cũng có thể mang nghĩa "because of somebody; for somebody"
- in favour (of sb/sth): ủng hộ ai/ điều gì
- for certain: (informal) without doubt
= for sure (informal)
- down in the dumps: (informal) buồn bã, chán nản = depressed
- in common with sb/sth (formal) in the same way as somebody/something.
- account for sth = explain.
- let the cat out of the bag: vô ý/ vô tình để lộ bí mật.
