The color of animals is by no means a matter of chance; it depends on many considerations (1), but in the majority of cases tends to protect the animal from danger by rendering it less conspicuous. Perhaps it may be said that if coloring is mainly protective, there ought to be but few brightly colored animals. There are, however, not a few cases in which vivid colors are themselves protective (3). The kingfisher itself, though so brightly colored, is by no means easy to see. The blue harmonizes with the water, and the bird as it darts along the stream looks almost like a flash of sunlight.
Desert animals are generally the color of the desert (4). Thus, for instance, the lion, the antelope, and the wild donkey are all sand-colored. “Indeed,” says Canon Tristram, “in the desert, where neither trees, brushwood, nor even undulation of the surface afford the slightest protection to its foes, a modification of color assimilated to that of the surrounding country is absolutely necessary (5). Hence, without exception, the upper plumage of every bird, and also the fur of all the smaller mammals and the skin of all the snakes and lizards, is of one uniform sand color.”
The next point is the color of the mature caterpillars, some of which are brown. This probably makes the caterpillar even more conspicuous among the green leaves than would otherwise be the case. Let us see, then, whether the habits of the insect will throw any light upon the riddle. What would you do if you were a big caterpillar? Why, like most other defenseless creatures, you would feed by night, and lie concealed by day. So do these caterpillars. When the morning light comes, they creep down the stem of the food plant, and lie concealed among the thick herbage and dry sticks and leaves, near the ground, and it is obvious that under such circumstances the brown color really becomes a protection. It might indeed be argued that the caterpillars, having become brown, concealed themselves on the ground, and that we were reversing the state of things. But this is not so, because, while we may say as a general rule that large caterpillars feed by night and lie concealed by day, it is by no means always the case that they are brown; some of them still retaining the green color. We may then conclude that the habit of concealing themselves by day came first, and that the brown color is a later adaptation.
Q1: What is the main idea of this passage?
  1. Animals inherit their coloration from their parents and pass on the same genes to their offspring
  2. the coloring of mature caterpillars is very difficult to explain without considering the behavior patterns they exhibit
  3. The coloring of animals changes widely over time and in different parts of the world
  4. The color of an animal is not coincidental, but is an adaptation developed over time to aid its survival (coincidental = a matter of chance, aid its survival = protect from danger)
Q2: What does “conspicuous” most probably mean?
  1. noticeable: dễ nhận thấy
  2. difficult to see: khó nhìn thấy
  3. vulnerable: dễ bị tổn thương
  4. dreadful: khủng khiếp
Q3: Which of the following statements is NOT TRUE according to the passage?
  1. Desert animals usually adapt their color to the color of the desert
  2. Eye-catching colors are not protective in any case (eye-catching ~ vivid)
  3. Some mature caterpillars are not brown
  4. Most vulnerable creatures stay hidden by day and go out for food by night
Q4: What does “its” in the second paragraph refer to?
  1. tree
  2. brushwood
  3. lion
  4. desert animal
Q5: Why is it particularly important for desert animals to match their coloration to the environment?
  1. Because food and water are especially scarce in the desert
  2. Because the barren, sparse environment of the desert ensures a lack of natural protection and cover (barren, sparse = cằn cỗi, thưa cây)
  3. Because the color tones of the desert are particularly suited to swift evolutionary adaptation
  4. Because the color of the desert is remarkably similar to the natural colors of many animal.

Once people wore garlic around their necks to ward off disease.Today, most Americans would scoff at the idea of wearing a necklace of garlic cloves to enhance their well-being. However, you might find a number of Americans willing to ingest capsules of pulverized garlic or other herbal supplements in the name of health.
Complementary and alternative medicine, which includes a range of practices outside of conventional medicine such as herbs, homeopathy, massage therapy, yoga, and acupuncture, hold increasing appeal for Americans. In fact, according to one estimate, 42% of Americans have used alternative therapies. In all age groups, the use of unconventional healthcare practices has steadily increased in the last 30 years, and the trend is likely to continue, although people born before 1945 are the least likely to turn to these therapies.
Why have so many patients turned to alternative therapies? Many are frustrated by the time constraints of managed care and alienated by conventional medicine’s focus on technology. Others feel that a holistic approach to healthcare better reflects their beliefs and values. Others seek therapies that relieve symptoms associated with chronic disease; symptoms that mainstream medicine cannot treat.
Some alternative therapies have even crossed the line into mainstream medicine, as scientific investigation has confirmed their safety and efficacy. For example, physicians may currently prescribe acupuncture for pain management or to control the nausea associated with chemotherapy. Additionally, many U.S. medical schools teach courses in alternative therapies, and many health insurance companies offer some alternative medicine benefits.

1. What is the main idea of this passage?
a. Alternative medicine is now a big business in the United States with more Americans seeking it out than ever before.
b. Today, it is not unusual for mainstream doctors to incorporate alternative therapies into their practice.
c. Over the last few decades, alternative medicine has become more popular, accepted, and practiced in the United States.
d. People are tired of conventional medicine’s focus on technology.
2. What does “scoff at” probably mean?
a. approve
b. dismiss
c. prefer
d. enhance
3. According to the passage, which practice would not be defined as alternative medicine?
a. pain management
b. acupuncture
c. taking herbal garlic supplements
d. massage therapy
4. Based on the information given, what kind of person would be least likely to seek out alternative medical treatment?
a. a senior citizen suffering from chemotherapy-induced nausea
b. a young woman suffering from chronic fatigue syndrome
c. a 45-year-old man who believes that his body and mind must be treated together.
d. a 25-year-old track star with chronic back pain
5. The passage indicates that alternative treatments are increasingly being used by mainstream medical professionals because
a. more and more Americans are demanding alternative therapies.
b. healthcare insurance companies are now providing some benefits for alternative medical treatments.
c. they are frustrated by the time constraints of managed care.
d. scientific studies are becoming available that prove their effectiveness and safety

:Chuothong10
