The weather's not nice. It is raining at the moment. Still, it is getting better slowly, and I'm sure it'll be fine when you come in the summer. I am looking forward to it. The job seems to be too demanding. Most of the time I deal with bookings and answer inquiries. But I suppose it'll be different when the tourist season starts next month. Even now the restaurants are beginning to get busier.

The Past Perfect vs. The Past Simple

Pronunciation / e / and / æ /​

A. Lí thuyết

I. The Past Perfect ( Thì Quá Khứ Hoàn Thành)

- Diễn tả 1 hành động hay 1 sự việc xảy ra trước một hành động khác ở quá khứ.

Example:

· When Tom arrived at the party, Paul had already gone home.

· They had finished their homework before they went swimming.

- Được dùng trong lời nói tường thuật sau các động từ “said”, “told”, “asked”, “explained”, “thought”, “wondered”. Nó nói đến hành động đó xảy ra trước cuộc đối thoại.

Example:

· I told them that I had done enough work for one day.

· She wondered who had left the door open.

- Thường được dùng với các liên từ chỉ thời gian “when”, “after”, “as soon as”.

Example:

· When I had done my h.w, I went out for a walk.

· She didn’t feel the same after her cat had died.

- Tuy nhiên có thể dùng thì QKĐ với liên từ “before” thay cho thì QKHT.

Example:

· He died before she (had) had a chance to talk to him.

· She went out before I (had) realized what was happening.

- Dùng để diễn tả 1 hi vọng, 1 ước mơ chưa thực hiện được.

Example:

· I had intended to make a cake, but I ran out of time.

· I had hoped that we would be able to leave tomorrow, but it’s beginning to look difficult.

- Được dùng sau “if”, “if only”, “wish”, “would rather” để nói đến áo ước hoặc điều kiện không có thật trong quá khứ.

Example:

· I wish I had had time to do my h.w yesterday.

· I would rather you had told him the truth.

· If only she had come to the party.

· If you had come, everything would have been all right.

II. The Past Perfect vs. The Past Simple (Phân biệt thì quá khứ hoàn thành và quá khứ đơn)

Hãy xem 2 ví dụ sau để hiểu rõ hơn về 2 thì này:

a) “Was Tom at the party when you arrived?” “No, he had already gone home.” (Lúc bạn đến Tom có mặt ở buổi tiệc không?" "Không, anh ấy đã đi về nhà rồi.)
Nhưng: “Was Tom there when you arrived?” “Yes, but he went home soon afterward.” ( Lúc bạn đến Tom còn ở đó không?" "Có, nhưng ngay sau đó anh ấy đã đi về nhà.)

b) Ann wasn’t at home when I phoned. She was in London. ( Khi tôi gọi điện Ann không có nhà. Cô ấy đã ở Luân Đôn.)
Nhưng: Ann had just got home when I phoned. She had been in London. (Ann đã về nhà khi tôi gọi điện thoại cô ấy. Cô ấy đã ở Luân đôn.)
