Đối với âm s,es
_ /s/ khi đi sau các phụ âm phát âm thành /f/, /$\phi $/ (âm th viết tạm như thế này), /k/, /p/, /t/.
_ /iz/ khi đi sau các chữ cái s, x, z, ch, sh, ce, ge
_ /z/ các trường hợp còn lại.
Đối với âm ed
_ /t/ đứng trước là các phụ âm: p, k, f th, s, sh, ch.
_ /id/ đứng trước là: t, d
_ /d/ còn lại
Đặc biệt: Những từ sau luôn phát âm /id/:aged, learned, beloved, pressed

Các quy tắc đánh trọng âm
I)Từ có 2 âm tiết
1)Đa số N và Adj, trọng âm rơi vào âm tiết thứ nhất, V và Adv trọng âm rơi vào âm tiết thứ 2.
2)a)N có tận cùng -wo, -oo, -oon, -ee rơi vào chính nó
b)V có tận cùng là -ow, -en, -el, -er, -ish, rơi vào âm tiết thứ nhất
c)N ngoại lai => rơi vào âm tiết thứ 2
d)1 từ vừa là V, vừa là N =>theo công thức chung V rơi vào âm tiết thứ hai, N rơi vào âm tiết thứ nhất.
3)Đại từ phản thân rơi vào âm tiết thứ 2
4)Trạng từ và giới từ, trọng âm đặt ở từ gốc
Chú ý:Khi thêm tiền tố và hậu tố, trọng âm không thay đổi.
5)Từ ghép: N rơi vào âm tiết thứ nhất, Adj rơi vào âm tiết thứ 2.
II)Từ có 3 âm tiết.
1)Đa số những từ có 3 âm tiết, trọng âm rơi vào âm tiết thứ nhất.
2)Những từ có 3 âm tiết kết thúc bằng -ee, -eer, -ese, -ette, -esque, -ique trọng âm rơi vào chính nó.
III)Từ có 4 âm tiết trở lên
1)Phần lớn những từ có 4 âm tiết trở lên, trọng âm rơi vào âm tiết thứ 3 tính từ cuối từ ngược lên đầu từ.
2)Trọng âm thường đứng trước các đuôi sau -tion, -sion, -ical, -wal, -van, -ity, -stive, -itude, -logy, -graphy
