LEARNING TO GET ON WITH PEOPLE
In order to get on with other children, children must have a standard of give and take. To some extent they can learn this from their parents, but they must also learn that they cannot be friends with (16)…………....and that some personal characteristics are more appealing than (17)…………...... . There will be children and adults with (18)…………... they cannot get along, so they must learn to deal with them (19)…………… excessive friction. They must also learn how (20)…………….... they should be willing to compromise in order to make (21)…………... acceptable to others, so they need to know when to draw the line and say, “(22) …………. far, but no further." They must also recognise that they have the choice of (23) ……………. along with the majority or standing (24)…………. without rancour or bitterness.
In learning these social skills children acquire civilised (25)……………… and the ability to live in a community in which everyone is (26)...................... to a large extent on everyone else. They (27)………….... encounter others who are not quite so civilised, and they must be prepared to meet them (28)…………...understanding and resolution. In each case they must rely on their own course of behaviour, according to the particular circumstances. They must realise that there is a time to stand (29) …………….. ground, a time to compromise, and even a time when it is better to run (30)............... .
