Once a farmer lived a comfortable life with Ills family. His chickens laid many eggs which the farmer used to buy food and clothing for his family.

One day. he went to collect the eggs and discovered one of the chickens laid a gold egg. He shouted excitedly to his wife, "We're rich! We’re rich!"

His wife ran to him both looked at the amazement. The wife wanted more, so her husband decided to cut open all ihe chickens and find more gold eggs. Unfortunately he couldn't find any eggs. When he finished all the chickens were dead.

There were no more eggs of any kind for the foolish farmer and his greedy wife.

Today I’m going to tell you about the xoe dance, a traditional dance of the Thai ethnic group in VietNam. Thai people have followed this spiritual tradition for generations.

The xoe dance expresses people’s working life and wishes for a happy and wealthy life. It is performed in both public and private gatherings such as celebrations, festivals or family reunions.

The xoe dance has more than 30 forms based on the first six ancient forms. The most popular form is the xoe vong or ‘circle dance’ because it expresses social unity. People, young or old alike, join hands to make a circle around the fire and dance to the music. Besides the circle dance, there are dances with conical hats, paper fans or scarves.

Old people say they shouldn’t break with this tradition because it reflects Thai culture and lifestyle. As a Thai folk song goes, without the xoe dance, the rice won’t grow and people won’t get married.

I went to a village school. In fact, there was only one classroom for 15 students of different ages, both boys and girls, and one teacher who taught everything. The school didn't have a name, so we just called t ‘our school’. We used to walk to school. Some children went bare-footed.

At school we learnt to read and to write. We also learnt a little maths and history. There were no science essons, and we didn't have exams, either.

Although our school was small, it had strict rules. We had to behave ourselves. We stood up and bowed to greet our teacher at the start of every lesson. We could talk only when we were allowed to. However, jve had no homework and no extra classes. I had a lot of time to play outside and to help my parents in the house. I loved my school and those school days.
