Overall, it can reveal from the two that overgrazing and deforestation were both the causative factors in the worldwide land degradation and the effect on the three countries. In addition, Europe had a much higher percentage of degraded land than Oceania and North America.
When it comes to the main causes of agricultural land becoming less productive are depicted in the pie chart below, overgrazing, deforestation and over-cultivation were the major reasons, standing at approximately one-third for each, meanwhile, other factors only accounted for 7%, about 4 times lower than that of the rest.
As regards the way these given reasons impacted three continents: North America, Europe, and Oceania, Europe had the greatest proportion of degraded land during the 1990s,at 23%, and the biggest factor was deforestation, accounting for 9.8%. Oceania was the second most affected region, at about 13% and mainly caused by overgrazing with 11.3% and didn’t over cultivate its land. Whist, there were only 5% of North America’s area degraded and over-cultivation was the major reason, being responsible for 3,3% as well.
