Danh từ đếm được thường có 2 dạng: số ít (singular) và số nhiều (plural)
VD: The girl is singing [tex]\rightarrow[/tex] singular
The girls are singing [tex]\rightarrow[/tex] plural
1. Cách thành lập danh từ số nhiều
a. Hầu hết các danh từ số nhiều được thành lập bằng cách thêm -s vào danh từ số ít
VD: boy [tex]\rightarrow[/tex] boys
house [tex]\rightarrow[/tex] houses
dog [tex]\rightarrow[/tex] dogs
Các chữ cái, chữ số, dấu hiệu và những từ loại khác không phải là danh từ mà được dùng như danh từ thì thường thêm 's
VD: There are two 9's in 99 (Trong số 99 có hai số 9)
b. Các danh từ tận cùng bằng s, sh, c, x, z được tạo thành số nhiều bằng cách thêm -es
VD: box [tex]\rightarrow[/tex] boxes
bus [tex]\rightarrow[/tex] buses
c. Các danh từ tận cùng bằng phụ âm + y được tạo thành số nhiều bằng cách đổi y thành i và thêm es
VD: baby [tex]\rightarrow[/tex] babies
party [tex]\rightarrow[/tex] parties
Các danh từ tận cùng bằng 1 nguyên âm + y thì chỉ thêm -s
VD: day [tex]\rightarrow[/tex] days
key [tex]\rightarrow[/tex] keys
d. 1 số dành từ tận cùng bằng f hoặc fe: calf, half, knife, leaf, life, loaf, self, sheaf, chef, thief, wife, wolf được tạo thành số nhiều bằng cách đổi f hoặc fe thành -ves
VD: knife [tex]\rightarrow[/tex] knives
wife [tex]\rightarrow[/tex] wives
Các danh từ tận cùng bằng f hoặc fe khác thì thêm s như bình thường
VD: roof [tex]\rightarrow[/tex] roofs
handkerchief [tex]\rightarrow[/tex] handkerchief
1 số danh từ tận cùng bằng f có thể có 2 hình thức số nhiều
VD: scarf [tex]\rightarrow[/tex] scarfs, scarves
dwarf [tex]\rightarrow[/tex] dwarfs, dwarves
e. 1 số danh từ tận cùng bằng một phụ âm + o được tạo thành số nhiều bằng cách thêm -es
VD: tomato [tex]\rightarrow[/tex] tomatoes
hero [tex]\rightarrow[/tex] heroes
Các danh từ tận cngf bằng một nguyên âm + o, các từ vay mượn của nước ngoài hoặc từ viết tắc thì chỉ cần thêm -s
VD: radio [tex]\rightarrow[/tex] radios
photo [tex]\rightarrow[/tex] photos
Một số danh từ tận cùng bằng o có thể có 2 hình thức số nhiều
VD: volcano [tex]\rightarrow[/tex] volcanos, volcanoes
tornado [tex]\rightarrow[/tex] tornados, tornadoes
f. Số nhiều bất quy tắc
- 1 số danh từ thay đổi khi ở số nhiều:

- 1 số danh từ không thay đổi khi ở số nhiều: sheep, deer, fish, aircraft, craft, salmon, carp,...

2. Cách phát âm đuôi -s hoặc -es
Có 3 cách phát âm: /s/, /z/, /iz/
- /iz/ khi es đứng sau danh từ tận cùng bằng các âm: /s/, /z/, /ʃ/, /tʃ/, /ʤ/, /ʒ/
VD: watches, bridges, boxes,...
- /s/ khi s đứng sau các danh từ tận cùng bằng các âm vô thanh: /θ/, /f/, /k/, /p/, /t/
VD: waits, laughes, books, jumps,...
- /z/ khi s đứng sau danh từ tận cùng bằng nguyên âm (a, e, i, o, u) và các phụ âm hữu thanh còn lại
