Ex5: Read the following passage and choose the correct answer to each of the questions.

Fiction is the writing of a story or text that is not true. It can be written in the form of either poetry or prose. Poetry is a style of writing in which short lines form verses. Often, words at the end of these lines rhyme, like “bed” and “red”. We call a group of verses about one subject a “poem”. Prose writing does not have verses, nor does it rhyme. It uses sentences and paragraphs. Prose is used in magazine articles, newspaper stories, short stories, and books.

Prose fiction has existed since ancient times, but most early fiction was actually written as poetry. Scholars disagree about the date of the first prose fiction book, or novel. Some scholars classify fictional stories from ancient Greece and Rome as the early novels. Others claim there were novels in Asia as early as the 6th century. These early novels were mostly short adventure stories about fictional characters.

In Europe, prose fiction began to seriously challenge poetry in the 16th century. A Spanish author, Cervantes, wrote Europe’s first prose novel in the early 1600s. However, longer novels, like Cervantes’s Don Quixote, did not become very popular until the 1700s. By that time, there were more printing presses, and more people knew how to read. In addition, more people had money to buy these books. Today, the vast majority of fiction is written in prose rather than in poetry.

    1. What does the word “It” in paragraph 1 refer to?

    A. Non-fiction B. Fiction C. Poetry D. Prose

    2. What can we learn about newspaper stories from paragraph 1?

    A. They are usually written in verse.

    B. They are usually written in rhyme.

    C. They are usually written in paragraphs.

    D. They are usually written by scholars.

    3. The word “classify” in paragraph 2 is closet in meaning to ..............

    A. teach B. write C. call D. learn

    4. What can be inferred from the second paragraph?

    A. Prose fiction has been very popular since years ago.

    B. Prose fiction has not been around since ancient times.

    C. The date of the earliest known novel is the sixteenth century.

    D. The date of the earliest known novel is not easy to determine.

    5. The topic discussed in paragraph 3 is about .....................

    A. when prose became dominant in Europe.

    B. when poetry became dominant in Europe.

    C. when Cervantes became an important author.

    D. when prose began in Spain.

GOAL: ENDING CHILD LABOR

Carefully guiding a needle that’s longer than his tiny fingers, a young boy in Pakistan stitches together the leather pieces of a soccer ball. He sits crouched in the corner of a hot, airless shed for 12 hours. For his long day’s work, he will earn 60 cents.

The boy is one of more than 200 million children who work at hard, sometimes dangerous jobs all over the world. Child labor exists in two-third of the world’s nations. From Indonesia to Guatemala, poor childrenas young as six are sent off to work. Often they are mistreated and punished for not working hard enough. Children mix the gunpowder for firecrackers in Chinaand knot the threads for carpets in India, all for pennies a day. Sometimes they are sold as slaves.

In a speech to the Child Labor Coalition when he was U.S. Secretary of Labor, Robert Reich expressed gratitude for the organization’s work to end ause of child labor, “You turned up the heat, and you got results.” He also congratulated Craig Kielburger, then 13, of Canada, who traveled the world for a year fighting for kid’s rights. Craig believes kids can make a difference. He offers this advice, “Write letters to companies and government officials. Put pressure on leaders to make changes and to stop the misuse of children.”

One solution to the the child-labor problem in poor countries is education. “The future of these countries,” Secretary Reich declared, “ depends on a work force that is educated. We are prepared to help build schools.”

Aghan’s boss was very cruel. “I was always crying for my mother,” he recalls. Aghan’s dream was to learn to write so that he could send letters to his parents.

Universally acclaimed as America’s greatest playwright, Eugene O’Neill was born in 1888 in the heart of the theater district in New York City. As the son of an actor he had early exposure to the world of the theater. He attended Princeton University briefly in 1906, but returned to New York to work in a variety of jobs before joining the crew of a freighter as a seaman. Upon returning from voyages to South Africa and South America, he was hospitalized for six months to recuperate from tuberculosis. While he was recovering, he determined to write a play about his adventures on the sea. He went to Harvard, where he wrote the one-act Bound East for Cardiff. It was produced on Cape Cod by the Provincetown Players, an experimental theater group that was later to settle in the famous Greenwich Village theater district in New York City. The Players produced several more of his one-acts in the years between 1916-1920. With the full-length play Beyond the Horizon, produced on Broadway in 1920, O’Neill’s success was assured. The play won the Pulitzer prize for the best play of the year. O’Neill was to be awarded the prize again in 1922, 1928, and 1957 for Anna Christie, Strange Interlude, and Long Day’s Journey Into Night. Although he didn’t receive the Pulitzer prize for it, Mourning becomes Electra, produced in 1931,is arguably his most lasting contribution to the American theatre. In 1936, he was awarded the Nobel Prize.

O’Neill’s plays, forty-five in all, cover a wide range of dramatic subjects, but several themes emerge, including the ambivalence of family relationships, the struggle between the sexes, the conflict between spiritual and material desires, and the vision of modern man as a victim of uncontrollable circumstances. Most of O’Neill’s characters are seeking for meaning in their lives. According to his biographers, most of the characters were portraits of himself and his family.
