Chuyển từ nói trực tiếp sang cách nói gián tiếp chính là tường thuật còn gì nữa. Một người than gia cuộc họp rồi về tường thuật lại cho những người khác nghe chẳng hạn, thì đúng là tường thuật sang gián tiếp. Câu gián tiếp chính là câu tường thuật.
