[MC1]: Welcome to talk show with guest today. The topic of this talk show is: "Brunei - Strange country in Southeast Asia". Accompanying me today is the editor [MC2] from the Vietnam TV station.
[MC2]: Thanks for the introduction of [MC1]. I am <name>. Thank you to the audience who came to the talk show to talk with guests today. And now I and [MC 1] would like to warmly welcome the very special guests from Brunei Darussalam.
[MC1]: To today's talk, I would like to welcome [A] who is a staff member of the Vietnamese ambassador to Brunei, and with that, I would like to introduce a cultural researcher working in Brunei.
[MC2]: We are honored to welcome two guests [C], [D] invited to today's meeting, who are citizens living in this strange country.
[MC1]: Surely you know what we're going to talk about today, right? First, listen to [A] an overview of the country of Brunei.
[A]: As we all know, Brunei is located in Southeast Asia, bordering the East Sea and Malaysia, close to an important sea route connecting the Indian Ocean with the Pacific Ocean. Consists of two separate parts located within the state of Sarawak in Malaysia.
In 2021, the population of Brunei is 443,308. Brunei is also the most sparsely populated country in Asia as well as in Southeast Asia.
[MC2]: One special thing, as far as I know, is that the full name of Brunei means "place of peace". That's great!
[MC2]: And mentioning Brunei is referring to the dominant economy, where petroleum and gold everywhere are right?
[A]: That's true! Brunei is the third-largest petroleum producer in Southeast Asia and the fourth-largest producer of liquefied petroleum gas in the world. Petroleum and natural gas are the basis of Brunei's development and prosperity.
But not because of that, Brunei's economy depends on petroleum. Brunei has built a fairly modern infrastructure. On the streets of Bandar Seri Bengawan Capital, there was not a single motorcycle insight. The roads are wide, there are not many traffic accidents.
[MC2]: Thanks for your answer. As far as I know, Brunei people have a longer life expectancy than in southeast Asia, does Brunei have more social benefits?
[C]: Yes! About health: everyone can go to the hospital for health care, from common illnesses to serious illnesses. All costs are covered by the government.
Students in Brunei attend school for free, but boys and girls attend separate schools. The State will grant scholarships to study abroad with the condition after returning, that person must work for the state.
Regarding housing: everyone can own a house, the government will have public housing projects. And yet, you will be completely surprised because the cost of living in Brunei is extremely cheap. In the Kingdom, gasoline fuel prices are cheaper than even bottled water and the people are hardly taxed.
[MC1]: But Brunei is a Muslim country, is it strict?
[D]: Of course! Brunei follows an absolute monarchy, where the King is the most powerful person. The Sultan of Brunei has full executive power and is also the head of state. The country's legal system is based on both British common law and Islamic Sharia law
First, the strict Law of Brunei prohibits the sale of alcohol. But Tourists can drink alcohol in hotel rooms or private homes as long as they are not drunk in public.
Second, adultery is taboo. It is considered illegal in Brunei and can be punished with ancient punishments such as stoning to death.
And thirdly, according to Brunei's law on environmental protection, anyone who commits acts of harm to the natural environment will face the risk of facing a prison term of 2 years or having to pay a very high violation fee.
[MC1]: So what about the LGBT topic that Brunei once condemned by the United Nations?
: Sadly, homosexuality is completely illegal in Brunei. In recent years, the Muslim Kingdom has come under international scrutiny for wanting to punish LGBT people with death.
[MC2]: That way, people in the LGBT community won't be able to be themselves!
[MC1]: Here we will take a tour around this strange but beautiful Brunei country!
[D]: Istana Nurul Iman Palace is the residence of the king and his royal lineage. At the same time, the palace is also the residence and working place of the Government of Brunei.
It is the most beautiful and largest mosque in Southeast Asia.
It is the most beautiful and largest mosque in Southeast Asia.
It is the largest and most modern amusement park in Southeast Asia.
[MC2]: OH, it’s so modern and beautiful. Next, listen to introduce the culture and gastronomy of this beautiful country.
: Bruneians often wear Islamic clothing with a headscarf that hides their hair and long clothes that cover the body. Women should not have bare hands and wear short skirts above the knee. When coming here, visitors should respect the dress style of the local people and should also dress politely.
The Brunei people take physical contact very seriously, so you should note the following: - Bruneians shake hands very gently, do not shake hands of the opposite sex and point at others - Do not step in front of someone who is praying.
[MC1]: Amazing! Dear audience with a long history so Brunei has a lot of delicious and unique dishes. Let's find out what those dishes are.
