Located in the northwest region of Viet Nam on the spectacular Hoang Lien Son mountain range, Sa Pa is considered a mecca for hikers due to its excellent trekking terrain. It is also home to many different ethnic minority groups, including the H’mong, Dao, Giay and Phu La. The easiest way to get to Sa Pa is to take an overnight train from Hanoi to Lao Cai then another short ride by car. You can trek through the Black H’mong villages such as Cat Cat, Sin Chai or Ta Giang Phin, where you can visit their houses, interact with the children and learn how they earn a living as well as how they live. These ethnic people are very proud of their culture and still keep their traditions and way of life alive. They also have their own language and wear traditional indigo blue clothing. In addition, visitors have the opportunity to admire some breathtaking views of the rice terraces during their treks through the villages. Don’t miss out on Ta Phin Village, home to the Red Dao ethnic people, during your Sa Pa trip. Red Dao women wear very colourful red embroidered clothes decorated with coins. They also wear red scarves on their heads. Many of them shave off their eyebrows for beauty. What’s more, tourists can take the chance to experience a herbal bath using a unique recipe prepared by the Red Dao there.
