Mình cũng không hiểu tại sao câu này là D.

Câu này bạn đang nhấn mạnh hành động chứ không phải là việc "swallow", chính vì thế bạn phải chuyện sang dạng verb-ing

Sometimes, languages cannot be explained properly. In this case, you need to KNOW rather than UNDERSTAND. People just don't use "shortage" in this sentence.

Câu này viết khá lủng củng. Nên thay "concentrated" thành "powerful" để dễ hiểu hơn.

Khi nhìn câu này, bạn sẽ thấy câu có 2 verb "is". Điều này không hợp lý vì trong 1 câu đơn chỉ có thể có 1 verb chính. Vì thế chữ "is" thứ hai sẽ là verb chính. Bạn nên tìm phần điền thêm nào giúp biến chữ "is" thứ nhất thành verb phụ trợ phrase. Như vậy câu B sẽ là câu hợp lý nhất vì "where French influence is the most concentrated" là phrase phụ trợ cho noun "the city"

Bạn ko nên cứ nhìn thấy "the same" là thêm "as" vào đằng sau. Khi bạn dùng "the same as", sau "the same as" phải là một noun. Đằng này sau đó lại là một collocation word. Chính vì vậy dùng B để câu có nghĩa.

In the absence of something: It isn't here.
In the lack of something: It's isn't here and It is desired. Or It is not here in sufficient quantity and It (in sufficient quantity) is desired.
