Trinh Cong Son is a prominent Vietnamese musician, composer and painter. He was born in 1939 in Dak Lak Province but grew up in Hue for most of his childhood. He started composing music when he was in his late teens and became one of the Vietnamese most salient figures in modern music.
His songs are mostly about love, human fate and the future. He wrote over 500 songs, among which the most well-known works are Diem xua, Mot coi di ve, Nho mua thu Ha Noi … Khanh Ly and Hong Nhung are two singers whose names are often associated with Trinh’s music.
One of his biggest achievements, the lullaby (Ngu di con) about a mother grieving to her son who has gone off to war, quickly became a hit in Japan in 1972.
Trinh Cong Son received the Golden Disk Award in the same year. He died on April 1st, 2001 at the age of 62 in Ho Chi Minh City. Hundreds of thousands of people gathered at his funeral. Today, his music still remains very popular among the Vietnamese, both old and young.
