II. GRAMMAR:
Conditional sentences, Type 3 (Câu điều kiện loại 3).
Câu điều kiện loại ba diễn tả một sự việc, một điều kiện không có thật trong quá khứ chỉ là sự hối tiếc, một ước muốn thuộc về quá khứ mà thôi.
Ex: - The driver wasn't careful. He had an accident. If the driver had been more careful, he wouldn't have had had the accident.
- Tom didn’t go to the party last night. If he had gone to the party last night, he could have met the new manager.
* Ta có thể bỏ “If" nếu dùng hinh thức đảo ngữ.
If I had known ... —> Had I known ...
if Tom had come ... —> Had Tom come ...
* Ta có thể kết hợp câu điều kiện loại 2 (phần Mệnh đề chính) và câu điều kiện loại ba (phần mệnh đề If) để diễn tả hành động hay sự việc xảy ra trong quá khứ ảnh hường đến hiện tại (now).
Ex: - If I hadn’t stayed up late last night, I wouldn’t be so tired now.
- You wouldn’t be so hungry if you had had breakfast this morning.
