TOM'S HOLIDAYS IN THE COUNTRY
Last August Tom spent his holidays on his friend Jack's farm. August is the busiest time of the year for farmers, because it it then that they have to cut the corn.
The weather was fine during his stay on the farm. One cannot cut corn when it is wet because then it will go bad when one piles it up. The farmers have to wait for sunshine, and then cut and dry the corn quickly before rain comes.
Everyday, Tom and Jack got up very early in the morning. And after they had eaten an early breakfast with plenty of farm products-sausages, eggs, bread and milk-they went into the fields to help Jack's parents with their farmwork. Tom's job was to throw the corn on to the high carts pulled by two huge horses each.
In the afternoon they went for a hike around the country. The vivid scenery in the country at dawn as well as at duck nearly took Tom's breath away and he wished his parents could have a cottage in th country so that he could fully enjoy his holidays there.
The farmwork, the fresh, cool and pure air in the country made Tom feel quite relaxed, strong and healthy when he came back to the city for his school work.
* Questions:
1. Why August is the busiest time of the year?
2. What was the weather like during Tom's stay on the farm?
3. What did Tom and Jack have for breakfast?
4. Where did they go after their early breakfast?
5. What did they do there and what was Tom's job?
6. What did they do in the afternoon?
7. Was Tom surprised at the beauty of the countryside?
8. How did Tom feel after his return from Jack's farm?
9. Give the adjectives from: city, country, rain, product.
10. Give the nouns from: fresh, cool, pure, healthy, vivid, huge.
11. Give the verbs from: cool, pure, fresh, product.

Dear Maria,

At last! Hooray! We finish all our exams yesterday. The last one was History. It was horrible. I think History is really difficult because I can't remember all the facts and the dates.

I did seven subjects. The worst were Science and History. I found them very difficult. I always forget most of the things we've learned.

The best subject this year was Geography, but we only had it twice a week.

We're going to Wales in the middle of August, to see my granddad. Would you like to come with us? Mum says it's OK.

Please write and tell me about your year at school. What was it like? Were your exams easy?

Bye for now.

Peter.

Halloween

Halloween is an annual holiday celebrated on October 31.

Halloween has origins in the ancient festival known as Samhain, which is derived from Old Irish and means roughly "summer's end". This was a festival celebrated mainly in Ireland and Scotland. This festival is regarded as the "Celtic New Year". The celebration has some elements of a festival of the dead. The ancient Celts believed that the border between this world and the Other world became thin on Samhain, allowing spirits (both harmless and harmful) to pass through.

The family's ancestors were honoured and invited home while harmful spirits were warded off. It is believed that the need to ward off harmful spirits led to the wearing of costumes and masks. Their purpose was to disguise oneself as a harmful spirit and thus avoid harm.

But where does the origin of the name "halloween" come from? The term Halloween is shortened from All Hallows' Even – een is a shortening of evening. It is now known as "Eve of" All Saints' Day, which is November 1st.

Halloween is also related to A jack-o'-lantern which is typically a carved pumpkin. At night, a light is placed inside to illuminate the effect. Trick-or-treating is a customary celebration for children on Halloween. Children go in costume from house to house, asking for treats such as candy or sometimes money, with the question, "Trick or treat?" In some parts of Ireland and Scotland children still go guising. In this custom the child performs some sort of show, i.e. sings a song or tells a ghost story, in order to earn their treats.
