Over spring break we went to Greece. We stayed downtown Athens for about half of the trip, in a hotel right on one of the busiest streets. Streams of traffic went by constantly, never ceasing even into the early hours of morning. One evening we were still hungry because we were sick of eating eggplant and artichoke hearts, so we decided to walk into the plaka, which is the central part of downtown, where all the shops and restaurants are situated. We were walking downtown for about an hour looking for a place to order a decent meal. Different waiters would come out of their outside cafes, trying to persuade us to come and eat in their restaurant. They would often come up right in our faces and grab our hands to pull us toward the tables. Finally, we found a nice place we though we could afford, so we sat down and looked at the menu. The restaurant was named after the famous port Pireus. Fortunately, the menu was also written in English. We both decided to order something local, which in our case was seafood salad. When it came, it looked really delicious with tomato sauce and some other extras. While we were eating a man came up to us with a camera and it looked like he wanted to take our picture. He only spoke Greek, so we did not know how much money he wanted and while we were debating over that, he left, apparently thinking we did not want our picture to be taken at all. We felt rather stupid after that as though we had failed one of those tests to becoming a smart tourist. No sooner had we gone back to our meals than a small boy appeared with an accordion. He began playing to us. He did not say a word, so we did not know whether we were supposed to tip him or not. Probably, we were, so we didn’t. And the small boy walked over to the next table to keep playing. We felt bad again. We went on eating in relative peace for a few minutes enjoying eating outside under the starry sky. People strolled by casually and we felt almost as though we were part of the culture and not outside looking in on it. We tried to eat as much as possible because the food at the hotel left much to be desired. We were sick of eating crisps and chocolate bars from the hotel vending machines. As we were eating we suddenly heard these loud popping noises that resembled gunshots. But instead of diving under the table for safety, we looked around and saw that nobody seemed to be too concerned with the noises. After we had finished eating our meals we paid the waiter. We thought he would come back with our change so we could tip him and we waited and waited for him to come back. He never did, apparently thinking the extra money we gave him was the tip. So, basically, he got a tip almost the same size as the bill. We left, and later found out that the popping noises we had thought were gunshots were really fireworks over the Acropolis. 47
