compliment/complement
(n) BrE /ˈkɒmplɪmənt/; NAmE /ˈkɑːmplɪmənt/
(v) BrE /ˈkɒmplɪment/; NAmE /ˈkɑːmplɪment/
Usage:
- (n) to pay somebody a compliment (= to praise them for something)
- (v) compliment somebody (on something)

These words have similar spellings but completely different meanings. If you compliment someone, you say something very nice to them.
Ex: She complimented me on my English.
If one thing complements another, the two things work or look better because they are together.
Ex: The different flavours complement each other perfectly.
The adjectives are also often confused.
Complimentary
BrE /ˌkɒmplɪˈmentri/;NAmE /ˌkɑːmplɪˈmentri/

Ex: She made some very complimentary remarks about my English.
It can also mean ‘free’
Ex: There was a complimentary basket of fruit in our room.
Complementary
BrE /ˌkɒmplɪˈmentri/; NAmE /ˌkɑːmplɪˈmentri/

Ex: The team members have different but complementary skills.

rob/ steal

Usage:
- steal (sth) (from sb/sth)
- rob sb/sth (of sth)
[TBODY] [/TBODY]
Rob and steal both mean ‘take something from someone without permission’.
- Rob focuses on the place or person from which the thing is taken.
Ex: The gang robbed three banks over a period of six months, but were finally caught.
Our local post office was robbed early on Tuesday morning.
A young woman was attacked and robbed as she walked home from work last night.
WARNING!
When we are talking about a house, we use burgle (or burglarize in NAmE)
Ex: The house was burgled while they were all sleeping.
Not: The house was robbed...
- Steal focuses on the thing that is taken.
Ex: The thieves entered the museum through the roof and stole three paintings worth more than two million euros.
Our car was stolen from outside our house last week.
WARNING!
We usually don’t say rob + object stolen:
Ex: He stole my wallet.
Not: He robbed my wallet.

quite / fairly / rather / pretty

Look at these examples:
The exam was fairly difficult.
The exam was quite difficult.
The exam was rather difficult.
Quite is a little stronger than fairly, and rather is a little stronger than quite.
Rather is not very common in North American English; pretty has the same meaning and this is used in informal British English, too.
Ex: The exam was pretty difficult.
- In British English quite has two meanings.
Ex: I feel quite tired today(= fairly tired).
With adjectives that describe an extreme state (‘non-gradable’ adjectives) it means ‘completely’ or ‘absolutely’.
Ex: I feel quite exhausted.
With some adjectives, both meanings are possible. The speaker’s stress and intonation will show you which is meant.
Ex: Your essay is quite good(=fairly good—it could be better).
Your essay is quite good(= very good, especially when this is unexpected).
- In North American English quite usually means something like ‘very’, not ‘fairly’ or ‘rather’. Pretty is used instead for this sense.

#phuongdaitt1: mình đóng góp thêm chút xíu nha
1. Quite: Quite được sử dụng nhiều trong văn viết với nghĩa là "khá". Chúng ta có thể dùng quite trước a/an.
Ví dụ: My grandparents have quite a big garden.
Ngoài ra, quite cũng có nghĩa là hoàn toàn (completely). Ví dụ: quite sure đồng nghĩa với hoàn toàn chắc chắn.
Quite cũng có thể đứng trước động từ.
Ví dụ: I quite enjoy the badminton match yesterday, but I expected a different result.
2.Pretty: Mặc dù cũng có nghĩa là "khá" như từ quite, nhưng đây là từ chỉ nên dùng trong văn nói. Bạn thường thấy nó xuất hiện trong các bộ phim tiếng Anh.
Ví dụ: I meet my girlfriend pretty often.
3.Rather: Rather thường được dùng cho các trải nghiệm tiêu cực.
Ví dụ: She is rather over-confident. I think she should listen to others.
Khi dùng rather để miêu tả trải nghiệm tích cực, nó thường là một trải nghiệm bất ngờ và không mong đợi.
Ví dụ: This fridge is rather well-designed. Where did you buy it?
4. Fairly: Fairly mang nghĩa yếu hơn quite/ rather/ pretty. Nó thường miêu tả một điều gì đó dưới sự mong đợi của chúng ta.
Ví dụ: This car is fairly cheap, but I would like a car with more powerful engines.

If You Were Laid Off, You Weren't Fired

(Tìm bài viết này trên google (job-hunt.org) để hiểu sâu hơn)
- lay sb ↔ off: to stop employing somebody because there is not enough work for them to do
===> Đuổi việc không phải vì lỗi của bạn, mà vì không đủ việc để làm, như kiểu lọc mem ý
e.g: 200 workers at the factory have been laid off.
- fire sb: to force somebody to leave their job
===> Nguyên do không phải là lọc mem, có thể là vì bạn không đủ năng lực, hoặc bộ máy không phù hợp, có thể vì cả hai bên
e.g: We had to fire him for dishonesty.
