What is the main idea of the passage?
The passage talks mostly about __________________.
What is the passage mostly about?

Bây giờ hãy đọc đoạn văn ví dụ này và bắt đầu phân tích nhé

Today’s postal service is more efficient than ever. Mail that once took months to move by horse and foot now moves around the country in days or hours by truck, train, and plane. If your letter or package is urgent, the U.S. Postal Service offers Priority Mail and Express Mail
services. Priority Mail is guaranteed to go anywhere in the United States in two days or less. Express Mail will get your package there overnight.

1. What is the main idea of this passage?
a. more people use the post office for urgent deliveries than any other delivery service.
b. Express Mail is a good way to send urgent mail.
c. Priority Mail usually takes two days or less.
d. mail service today is more effective and dependable.
e. mail was once delivered by horse and foot.

Ở trong đoạn văn ví dụ trên topic sentence chính là câu đầu tiên “Today’s postal service is more efficient than ever”.

Ex 1: Reality TV shows will have an adverse effect on traditional dramas and comedies. As reality TV increases in popularity, network executives will begin canceling more traditional programs and replacing them with the latest in reality TV.
What is the main idea of the passage?
a. Reality TV is low quality.
b. reality TV shows get the highest ratings.
c. more and more people love to watch and participate in reality TV.
d. as reality TV gets more popular, more traditional television
shows may be threatened.
e. network executives make hasty and unwise decisions.

Ex 2: Mathematics allows us to expand our consciousness. Mathematics tells us about economic trends, patterns of disease, and the growth of populations. Math is good at exposing the truth, but it can also perpetuate misunderstandings and untruths. Figures have the power to mislead people.
What is the main idea of the passage?
a. the study of mathematics is dangerous.
b. words are more truthful than figures.
c. the study of mathematics is more important than other disciplines.
d. the power of numbers is that they cannot lie.
e. figures are sometimes used to deceive people.

Ex 3: The railroad was not the first institution to impose regularity on society, or to draw attention to the importance of precise timekeeping. For as long as Line merchants have set out their wares at daybreak and communal festivities have been celebrated, people have been in rough agreement with their neighbors as to the time of day. The value of this tradition is today more apparent than ever. Were it not for public acceptance of a single yardstick of time, social life would be unbearably chaotic: the massive daily transfers of goods, services, and information would proceed in fits and starts; the very fabric of modern society would begin to unravel.
What is the main ideas of the passage?
A.In modern society we must make more time for our neighbors.
B.The traditions of society are timeless.
C.An accepted way of measuring time is essential for the smooth functioning of society.
D.Society judges people by the times at which they conduct certain activities.

MULTIPLE CHOICE READING (2)

Hãy xem ví dụ sau:

More than half the global population relies on rice as a regular part of their diet. But rice paddies have a downside for the planet too: they produce as much as 17 percent of the world's total methane emissions. That is even more than coal mining emissions, which make 10 percent of total! So Christer Jansson, a plant biochemist at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, spent the past 10 years developing SUSIBA2, a genetically modified rice plant that emits almost no methane.

1. What is the negative effect of rice?

  1. It is regular part of more than half of the world population’s diet.
  2. Rice paddies emit more methane than coal mining industry.
  3. Its plantations produce 17% of the world’s total methane emissions.
  4. Rice has genetically modified sort SUSIBA2, which is harmful for health.

Ex 1: Many animals hibernate during parts of the year, entering a state that is similar to a very deep sleep. But hibernation is more than simply a deep sleep. The animal’s body temperature drops well below its normal range, the animal does not wake up for a long period of time, and its metabolism slows to the point that the animal does not need to eat or relieve itself during that period. In order to prepare for hibernation, the animal must build up its body weight and increase its body fat. This is important, since the animal will be living off its own body fat during the months of hibernation. Of course, once the period of hibernation is over, the animal “wakes up” to find itself slim and trim once again!

How does an animal prepare for hibernation?
a. It exercises for two months.
b. It gradually increases its sleeping habits.
c. It grows extra fur.
d. It eats more food than usual.

Ex 2: Dogs and cats should never be permitted to eat chocolate, because chocolate works like a poison in their bodies. Chocolate contains a chemical called theobromine, which is similar to caffeine. Human bodies are able to process the theobromine without any ill side effects, but dogs and cats cannot. Different types of chocolate contain different amounts of theobromine. It would take 20 ounces of milk chocolate to kill a 20-pound dog, but only two ounces of baker’s chocolate or six ounces of semisweet chocolate. The amounts, of course, are much smaller for a cat, whose body weight is typically less than that of a dog. Most cats are not naturally attracted to eating chocolate, but many dogs are. Dogs by nature will sample nearly anything that they see their masters eating, so pet owners must take care to keep all chocolate products well out of reach of their dogs and cats.

1. According to the passage, why is chocolate poisonous for dogs and cats?
a. It contains caffeine.
b. Chocolate is made from processed cocoa.
c. It gets stuck in their intestines.
d. They cannot process theobromine.
2. Why might a dog eat chocolate, according to the passage?
a. Because it tastes good.
b. Dogs won’t eat chocolate.
c. They can smell the theobromine.
d. Dogs like to imitate their owners.

MULTIPLE CHOICE READING (3)

  • What can you infer from… about…?
  • It can be inferred that…
  • Which of the following can be inferred about…?

Ex 1:
Until the 1850's, Herman Melville primarily published novels, including Moby Dick, which would later become one of America's most famous and beloved novels. His novels, however, had extremely low sales, and Melville had to quit writing novels because no publisher would agree to print his books. In an effort to make more money from his writing, Melville chose to publish some poetry instead. Poetry was extremely popular and sold well in 19th-century America, so Melville expected to make a profit from his first book of poems. These poems, however, were as unpopular as his novels, and sold scarcely any copies.

Which of the following can be inferred about Melville's poetry?
  1. It was not as well-written as Melville's novels.
  2. It was written primarily in iambic pentameter.
  3. It did not yield a significant profit for Melville.
  4. It was Melville's only possible way of making money.
Ex 2:
The body that impacted Earth at the end of the Cretaceous period was a meteorite with a mass of more than a trillion tons and a diameter of at least 10 kilometers. Scientists first identified this impact in 1980 from the worldwide layer of sediment deposited from the dust cloud that enveloped the planet after the impact. This sediment layer is enriched in the rare metal iridium and other elements that are relatively abundant in a meteorite but very rare in the crust of Earth. Even diluted by the terrestrial material excavated from the crater, this component of meteorites is easily identified. By 1990 geologists had located the impact site itself in the Yucatán region of Mexico. The crater, now deeply buried in sediment, was originally about 200 kilometers in diameter.
Question: Which of the following can be inferred from the paragraph about the location of the meteorite impact in Mexico?

  1. The location of the impact site in Mexico was kept secret by geologists from 1980 to 1990.
  2. It was a well-known fact that the impact had occurred in the Yucatán region.
  3. Geologists knew that there had been an impact before they knew where it had occurred.
  4. The Yucatán region was chosen by geologists as the most probable impact site because of its climate.
Ex 3:
People are always less happy to accept scientific data they feel contradicts their preconceived beliefs. No surprise here; no human likes to be wrong. But science isn't supposed to care about preconceived notions. Science, at least good science, tells us about the world as it is, and not as some wish it to be. Sometimes what science finds is consistent with a particular religion's wishes. But usually it is not.
Question: What can be inferred about good science? Select from the given options.
  1. A good science is well received by the educated people.
  2. A good science is based on concrete results obtained through testing the hypothesis.
  3. A good science and religion are same.
  4. A good science will always prove the general populace wrong.

MULTIPLE CHOICE READING (4)

The mystery itself seems to have been solved in an article about the writing of the word. According to the AP Style Guide, "esports" is considered the correct way to write the word. If it's a proper noun, or at the beginning of the sentence, "Esports" would be the proper way to write it. This was confirmed in 2017 during the American Copy Editors Society Convention.
People who use "eSports" or "e-sports" aren't necessarily wrong, even though esports is technically the correct way to write it. It just begins to feel a bit wonky. Think of it like the word email. You wouldn't necessarily use "eMail" when referring to it. You may use "e-mail" but the standard is pretty universally known as "email." The comparison is a fair one, considering the "e" in both words stands for electronic.
If you plan to apply for jobs in the esports industry, it's important to pay attention to how the employer you are inquiring about writes the word. If they write it as esports, you should do the same. If they write is as something like eSports, you could also write it like that on your application. To them, that is the correct way to write it, and you want to prove that you can adhere to their requirements and understand what they are looking for.

Q1. What is the main idea of the paragraph?
A. The difference between email and esports.
B. How to write the word “esports”.
C. Apply for a job in esports industry.
D. What does the letter “e” in esports stand for?
Q2. What does the phrase “inquiring” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. investigating
B. answering
C. lacking
D. training
Q3. The word "they" in paragraph 2 refers to
A. jobs
B. esports
C. the employer
D. word
Q4. Which of the following statements is NOT true, according to the passage?
A. At the beginning of the sentence "Esports" would be the right way to write.
B. AP Style Guide confirmed the proper way to write “esports” in 2017 during the American Copy Editors Society Convention.
C. Paying attention to how employers write the word “esports” is unnecessary when you want to apply for a job in esports industry.
D. Neither “esports” nor “eSports” is wrong
Q5. Which of the following can be inferred from the passage?
A. You can write both esports and eSports on your application if the employer you are inquiring about think that “eSports” is the correct way the write that word.
B. AP Style Guide considers "esports" as the wrong way to write the word
C. The standard of e.m.a.i.l is pretty universally known as "e-mail"

MULTIPLE CHOICE READING (5)

The conviction that historical relics provide infallible testimony about the past is rooted in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, when science was regarded as objective and value free. As one writer observes: 'Although it is now evident that artefacts are as easily altered as chronicles, public faith in their veracity endures: a tangible relic seems ipso facto real.' Such conviction was, until recently, reflected in museum displays. Museums used to look - and some still do - much like storage rooms of objects packed together in showcases: good for scholars who wanted to study the subtle differences in design, but not for the ordinary visitor, to whom it all looked alike. Similarly, the information accompanying the objects often made little sense to the lay visitor. The content and format of explanations dated back to a time when the museum was the exclusive domain of the scientific researcher.

Recently, however, attitudes towards history and the way it should be presented have altered. The key word in heritage display is now 'experience', the more exciting the better and, if possible, involving all the senses. Good examples of this approach in the UK are the Jorvik Centre in York; the National Museum of Photography, Film and Television in Bradford; and the Imperial War Museum in London. In the US the trend emerged much earlier: Williamsburg has been a prototype for many heritage developments in other parts of the world. No one can predict where the process will end. On so-called heritage sites the re-enactment of historical events is increasingly popular, and computers will soon provide virtual reality experiences, which will present visitors with a vivid image of the period of their choice, in which they themselves can act as if part of the historical environment. Such developments have been criticised as an intolerable vulgarisation, but the success of many historical theme parks and similar locations suggests that the majority of the public does not share this opinion.

Q1. What is the main idea of the paragraph?

A. Definition of museum

B. The development of museums

C. Opinions about the development of museums

D. Benefits of museum

Q2. What does the phrase “testimony” in paragraph 1 mean?

A. case

B. theory

C. hypothesis

D. proof

Q3. The word "it" in the paragraph 1 refers to

A. room of objects

B. museum

C. display

D. showcase

Q4. According to the writer, current trends in the heritage industry

A. emphasise personal involvement

B. have their origins in York and London

C. rely on computer images

D. reflect minority tastes

Q5. What is the main idea of the second paragraph?

A. Examples of museum in the world

B. Collections of factual evidence

C. Mixed views on current changes to museums

D. Current reviews and suggestions

MULTIPLE CHOICE READING (6)

Moving house

A few days later, Lyn’s mother told her to spend her evening sorting out and packing her belongings. ‘I’ll see to your clothes,’ she said. ‘I want you to do your books and paints and things. I’ve put some cardboard boxes in your room.’

‘You should’ve asked me,’ said Lyn, following her into the bedroom and seeing the assorted boxes. ‘I would’ve got some. There’s lots outside the supermarket near school.’

‘These came from the local shop. Oh it’s all right, I’ve shaken out all the dirt,’ she said as Lyn tipped up the nearest one, checking that it was empty.

‘OK. I’ll do it,’ said Lyn. ‘We’re ready to move then, are we?’

‘Yes, the day after tomorrow. You’re going to miss the end of school term, but you won’t mind that, will you?’

‘You mean Friday’s my last day at school?’ Lyn pushed the boxes aside with her foot to clear a path to her bed so that she could sit down. ‘You could’ve told me,’ she said. ‘I have got people to say goodbye to, you know.’

‘I am telling you,’ said her mother reasonably. ‘It doesn’t take two days to say goodbye, does it? You’ll only get upset.’

‘Why are we doing my things first?’ Lyn asked. ‘I haven’t got much. There’s all the other stuff in the house — shouldn’t we start on that first?’

‘Don’t worry about that. Mrs Wilson’s coming to help me tomorrow.’

Lyn remembered what Mandy Wilson had said all those days ago. ‘My mum’s coming round to help you pack.’ She felt angry with herself for not having said something straightaway — it was probably too late now. But worth a try. ‘I can help you,’ she said. ‘We can do it together.’

‘You’ll be at school – you want to say goodbye.’

‘I’ll go in at lunchtime for that. Mum, we can do it together. I don’t want that Mrs Wilson touching our things.’ Mandy Wilson’s mother – picking things over – telling Mandy what they’d found — Mandy at school announcing importantly, ‘My mother says they’ve got cheap plates and half of them are cracked and none of their towels match.’ The image was intolerable.

1 When Lyn is asked to pack her belongings, she
A objects to putting her clothes in boxes.
B is worried whether the boxes are clean.
C thinks that boxes are unsuitable for the job.
D is annoyed that she forgot to get better boxes.

2 When Lyn says ‘I’ll do it’(Paragraph Four, underlined), she is talking about
A filling something.
B checking something.
C collecting something.
D replacing something.

3 How does Lyn react to the news that the family is moving soon?
A She’s sad to learn that she’s leaving her old home.
B She wonders how her friends will take the news.
C She’s worried about missing her schoolwork.
D She wishes she’d been told earlier.

4 Why does Lyn offer to do more of the packing?
A She feels her mother needs her support.
B She regrets having refused to do it before.
C She distrusts the person who is coming to help.
D She’s concerned that some things will get damaged.
