Theo mình vì:

1, tend to + V nguyên

2, make illness : gây bệnh (kiểu giống như make disease, make sick)
Nhưng nói chung là dịch nghĩa rồi điền từ thui:
" They both relieve depression, which tends to make illness worse, and give people the will to fight their illnesses themselves."
Chúng vừa làm giảm bớt chứng trầm cảm, cái mà có xu hướng làm cho bệnh nặng hơn, vừa giúp con người có ý chí chiến đấu với bệnh tật.
