Many high school students in the United States get hands-on training in construction skills by building real houses.
One such program was created for construction and design students in Waterloo, Iowa. The students have already received training in many areas of house construction. They have put up walls, built windows and doors and completed some wiring.
The project is run by the Waterloo Career Center. The center offers students different programs designed to prepare them for careers in technical fields.
Students from the Waterloo Community School District recently took part in construction training that centered on the skill of masonry – work done with stone, brick or concrete materials.
The students spent five days at their school learning from experienced workers from the Masonry Institute of Iowa, a professional organization.
The workers taught the students how to mix mortar and build walls with bricks and blocks.

US-China trade talks extended

US and Chinese negotiators meeting this week in Beijing have agreed to extend trade talks until Wednesday, according to a spokesperson for the office of the US Trade Representative.
It's a fresh sign that discussions are moving in a positive direction as staff for the two sides meet face to face for the first time since President Donald Trump and his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping agreed in December to restart talks. China's Commerce Ministry said ahead of the meeting that it would last only two days.
The Trump administration, in its own notice announcing the US delegation, did not specify how long the visit would last, saying only that talks between the two countries were "beginning Monday." A person familiar with the matter told CNN that negotiators between the world's two largest economies needed more time to discuss issues that were part of the agenda.
On Tuesday, China also announced it would approve the imports of five new varieties of genetically modified crops, a move that would allow more American farmers to sell more biotech seeds to China. The decision included long-awaited approvals by US farmers, including corn and soybeans produced by DowDupont and BASF.
"The approval of the seeds is a big deal," said Craig Allen, president of the US-China Business Council. "It allows the seed companies, farmers and traders greater transparency. Hopefully, this also implies that in the future, there will be a more predictable process."

Việt Nam là một trong 10 điểm đến du lịch hấp dẫn nhất năm 2019

Thông tin do Hiệp hội Du lịch Mỹ (USTOA) mới công bố cho biết Việt Nam được đánh giá là 1 trong 10 điểm đến hấp dẫn nhất thế giới trong năm 2019. Việc lựa chọn danh sách này dựa trên kết quả cuộc khảo sát gần đây của PriceWaterhouseCoopers.Thông tin trên được đăng tải trong bài viết có tiêu đề “Du khách Mỹ muốn khám phá ở đâu trong năm 2019?” trên tờ USAToday. Theo đánh giá của USTOA, Italy được xem là điểm đến hấp dẫn nhất trong năm 2019, xếp thứ hai là Iceland, tiếp đến là Nhật Bản, Việt Nam, Australia, Pháp, Tây Ban Nha, Colombia, Campuchia và Bồ Đào Nha.Các thành viên của USTOA cũng đưa ra danh sách 10 điểm đến mới nổi của thế giới. Iceland tiếp tục được đánh giá ở vị trí thứ nhất, tiếp đến là Campuchia, Croatia, Colombia, Việt Nam, Bồ Đào Nha, Bhutan, Bolivia, Myanmar và Ethiopia.

Studies have linked heavy smartphone use with worsening teen mental health. But as teens spend time on sites like Instagram, Snapchat and YouTube, they also leave digital paths that may offer signs about their mental wellbeing.
Experts say possible warning signs include changes in writing speed, voice quality, word choice and how often a child stays home from school.
Researchers are testing smartphone apps that use artificial intelligence, or AI, to predict depression and possible self-harm. But there are still issues to address, including privacy issues and making sure children give permission to be closely followed.
Still, app developers say that effective, widely available depression-detecting apps may arrive soon.
Using smartphones as mental health detectors would require permission from users to download an app. They could take back their permission at any time.
Nick Allen is a psychologist at the University of Oregon. He is one of the creators of an app being tested on young people who have attempted suicide.
