The use of multiple-choice testing in American society has its beginnings in the idea of a meritocracy that is a society where the rulers are chosen not through thier wealth or connections but on their ability or merit. This idea can be traced as far back as the ancient Greeks. Even the ancient Chinese create examinations for the purpose of electing government officials. The notion of a society based on merit has always been favored in the United States. This has also been a country where the belief in universal individual opportunity has been greatly admired.
Until the Second World War, however, talent selection through higher education, and the opportunity for ordinary citizens to achieve their goals were separate and unrelated ideas. The introduction of widespread testing which was both reliable and valid meant that both these goals could be pursued together. This opportunity occured when the United States entered the Second World War. The US navy decided to test recruits in order to find which of them were suitable for college eucation before beginning military service. The eventual aim was for these recruits to be better able to perform higher level military tasks.
Because of the large number of people who had to be tested it was necessary to use a test which could be wuickly and reliably administere and scored at several test sites stimultaneously. On April 2 nd 1943, the first mass testing was administered to 325,000 young men. The success of the program meant that educational testing could be performed not just for talent selection but to give opportunity to the large mass of ordinary zitizens.

Herman Melville, an American author best known today for his novel Moby Dick was actually more popular during his lifetime for some of his other works. He traveled extensively and used the knowledge gaine during his travel as the basis of his early novels. In 1837, at the age of eighteen, Melville signed as a cabin boy on a merchant ship. That was to sail from his Massachusetts home to Liverpool England. His experiences on this trip served as a basis for the novel Redburn (1849). In 1841 Melville set out on a whaling ship headed for the South Seas. After jumping ship in Tahiti, he wandered around the islands of Tahiti and Mooreer. This South Sea island tour was a backdrop to the novel Omoo (1847). After three years away from home, Melville joined with the U.S Naval frigate that was returning to the eastern United States around Cape Horn. The novel White - jacket (1850) described this lengthly voyage as a navy seaman.
With the publication of these early adventure novels Melville developed a strong and loyal following among readers eager for his tales of exotic places and situations. However , in 1851, with the publication of Moby Dick , Melville's popularity started to disminish. Moby Dick, on one level the saga of the hunt for the great white whale, was also aheavily symbolic allegory of the heroic struggle of humanity agaist the universe. The public was not ready for Melville's literary metamorphosis from romantic adventure to philosophical symbolism. It's ironic that the novel that served to disminish Melville's popularity during his lifetime is the one for which he is best khown today.

Dạy có hay k hả ấy ơi, thấy nổi tiếng lắm và lớp cũng rất đông
Híc, đông vậy k biết những người ngồi dưới dưới có học được chữ nào ko :|

Vẫn học dc chứ ấy. Chỗ học thêm ấy chuyên nghiệp lắm, bán thẻ với số ngồi đàng hoàng mà, nghiêm túc, phòng học có máy lạnh nữa. Chỉ cần canh số thẻ chỗ nào ngon thì mua. Lớp đông nhg khi cô giảng mọi ng` vẫn im lặng nghe chứ bộ, chứ có ồn ào như cậu nghĩ đâu.
