After Chí Hòa battle Nguyễn Tri Phương went back to the North of Vietnam where French Captain Francis Garnier had a chance to meet him again:
- We've met each other before, havent we?
- Sir, i had a chance to meet you at Chí Hòa Battle and since that time, i have been always respecting you.

Chí Hòa Battle - 1861. French won.
Nguyễn Tri Phương at that time was considered as the only General entrusted by the King to fight against French since their approach to Đà Nẵng Harbor in 1851. He was indeed the only one could stop conflicts arisen in the South and even in the North of Vietnam. No one could come for his replacement at that moment.
At that time, Vietnam was still feudalism and had to confront with modern and cutting - edged weapons from a Big Colonist - French.
After being defeated in Hanoi, he was arrested. French tried to cure him from his serious injury with their respect, but he refused saying ' Being a General means to be honor to die at the battle which is not a blur."
Vietnamese descendants are very proud of such an excellent and great General - Nguyễn Tri Phương.
