Wishes - Câu điều ước
S + wish (+ that) + S + Vpast simple/ past continuous

A regret about a present situation which we want to be different (sự nuối tiếc về một tình huống ở hiện tại mà chúng ta muốn nó khác đi.)
Ví dụ: He wishes he were a billionaire. (But he is not a billionaire.) (Anh ta ước mình là một tỷ phú. Nhưng thực tế anh ấy không phải là một tỷ phú.)
I wish I were not talking to you now. (In fact, I'm talking to you.) (Tôi ước tôi không đang nói chuyện với anh bây giờ. Thực tế là tôi đang nói chuyện với anh.)
S + wish (+ that) + S + Vpast perfect/ past perfect continuous

A regret about the past (sự nuối tiếc về một tình huống ở quá khứ.)
Ví dụ: I wish he had come to see me off. (but he didn't.) (Tôi ước anh ấy đã tới tạm biệt tôi. Nhưng thực tế là anh ấy đã không đến.)

(Hai chủ ngữ S1 và S2 có thể giống hoặc khác nhau)A desire we know is impossible to achieve (Mong muốn, khao khát nằm ngoài khả năng, không thể đạt được ở hiện tại hay quá khứ.)
Ví dụ: : I wish I could turn back time. (present/ future) (Tôi ước mình có thể quay ngược được thời gian.)
She wishes she could have been there. (past) (Cô ấy ước mình đã có mặt ở đó.)Chú ý:
1. I wish (that) + clause = If only + clause (more emphatic) – điều ước được nhấn mạnh hơn wish
Ví dụ:
I wish you had told me the whole story. = If only you had told me the whole story.
(Ước gì anh đã kể cho tôi toàn bộ câu chuyện.)
2. Wish + to + Vbare infinitive (more formal) = want + to + Vbare infinitive
Ví dụ:
I don't wish to be rude but the pants really don't suit you.
= I don't want to be rude but the pants really don't suit you. (Tôi không muốn khiếm nhã nhưng cái quần thực sự không hợp với ông.)
