in a recent experiment, school teacher were asked to spell the words satellate, harass and embarrassment. the resuld was a dread failure, according to some. bit there were others who thought it was completely ínignificant. for surely spelling is the less important aspect of anyone's language? are not those who worry about spelling mere pedants, anxious to inflict petty rules on students? people mention great hisyorical figure who couldn't spell. Shakespeare, it seems, couldn't even spell his own name.

i should like to argue that spelling is important. i speak as one who believes that good spelling is a necessity. i do not share the view of one of my colleagues who toldme she never corrects the mistakes of her student. she" does not accept that mistakes a possible in native use of language" . of course, some of the people who say that spelling does not matter spell adequately themselves. English is not an easy language to master, either in spoken or written formation. There are many native speakers who if they were forced to take the tests administering to foreign learners would fail. It would considerate resistance of accepting it, since many people assume that language is a natural and easy acquisition, and is expressive of tha spontaneous self. For many years, educationalists have been divided between those who wish to accept this view and those who wish to challenge it. Of course, language changes but I see not virtue in language changing because of carelessness or ignorance.
