Lucille Ball, Funny Lady
In the 1950s, everyone in America knew Lucille Ball. They called her just "Lucy". Ball was a well-known actress and was famous for her big eyes, red hair and loud voice. But she was also much mmore. She helped the television industry get started. And she did it all by making people laugh.
Ball was very good at comedy. Her funny expresions made people roar with laughter. She started in a famous TV comedy, I love Lucy. It was first shown in 1951. And it was one of the biggest TV show ever. Lucy played a woman who wanted to get into show business. She made wild-and unsuccessful-plans to become a star. When her plans failed, Lucy would cry,"WAAAAAAA!" But Lucy kept trying! TV viewers loved her, because she was so much like ordinary Americans.
Ball also became an important business woman. She was very powerful. After I love Lucy went off the air in 1957, she still acted on TV. But I love Lucy remained her biggest success.
Milions of people really did love Lucy! When she died in 1989, an age in televion's history ended.
