Ranmorishnichi had already acquitted herself brilliantly in this excersise. She got right answers to most of the questions , except :

3. There were more than 200.....entering the race.
A. contestants B.candidates C. opponents D.competitors

cadndidate for a job, in an election or in an examination
contestant : person who partakes in a contest ( eg: beauty contest, etc.)
opponent:
competitor : person who partakes in a competition.

For example : Over 200 competitor entered the race.

@ talathangngoc : you should spare a thought for your excerise and give it a go before asking for help. Questions 1,2,4 is the section which help you review and strengthen your knowledge about symnonym, therefore, the chosen option is a brief and expliciting definition for the highlighted word or phrase taking place in the question. To recapitulate:

in all : altogether, as a total
keep our spirit up : stay cheerful
win through : achieve accomplishment despite difficulty, to succeed.

With warm regards,

Thực ra Ran cũng không hẳn là sai hoàn toàn, do "the race" ở câu There were more than 200.....entering the race. với nghĩa "cuộc đua" có thể hiểu là cuộc đua (thể thao), cuộc đua (tranh cử) hoặc cuộc đua (= cuộc thi thố). Nên candidatecompetitor (và kể cả contestant) đều có thể chấp nhận được. :) Nhưng phương án an toàn nhất khi không có gì giải thích thêm cho câu hỏi thì vẫn là competitors

Bonus:
1. Definition of contestant: a person who takes part in a contest or competition.
Eg: An anxious contestant on a television quiz show.

2. Definition of candidate: a person who applies for a job or is nominated for election.
Eg: Candidates applying for this position should be computer-literate

3. Definition of opponent: someone who competes with or opposes another in a contest, game, or argument.
Eg: He beat his Republican opponent by a landslide margin

4. Definition of competitor: a person who takes part in a sporting contest. Eg: Two competitors were banned for taking drugs
;)

Ai đó phân biệt dùm contestcompetition luôn đi ;))

Both competition and contest are used to depict the situation in which two or more individuals, groups or organisations compete with each other by means of completing a particular task, in order to gain something "that not everyone can have". However, they are not the same thing. Owing to the lack of time, I'd like to give a brief and superficial analysis of the difference between them, in response to Mrs. Hocmai.tienganh's question.

- Usage: In fact, competition is a more general phenomenon in comparision with "contest". Competition is merely an activities which involves struggle to find out who is the best at something. It can be held without fanfare, sponsor or the involvement of any tangible prizes, awards or certain agreed rules, which are, otherwise, regarded as a must-have segment/ a precondition of a contest. There are many unspoken competitions taking place in the classroom, workplace, or even between two nations. These examples were kindly provided by my friend:

in the 1960's there was a competition between the US and the USSR to see who could land a man on the moon first; this was known as the Space Race. No organization sponsored this competition and no prize was awarded to the winner, it was just something that two different nations were trying to be the first to do.
When you have more than one job applicant, and only one is going to be hired, that is a form of competition although it is not a contest.

In conclusion, competition and contest do, basically , imply the same thing, except the fact that competition can be simply regarded as an informal contest.

- Collocation variation (*)

+ Beauty contest, singing contest, speaking contest, talent contest, be no contest
+ spying for competitions
