These critics say that even if most of the players and fans do not intend to be insulting when they use the name of the team, in fact they are being insulting because the word Redskins itself is an insult. Supporters of the team say that intention matters more than etymology; that is, if you don't mean to be insulting by your choice of words, then no one should find your words insulting. Additionally, they say that the name Redskins might even be a tribute to Native Americans.

They played their first game on October 2, 1932, under the leadership of coach Lud Wray, against the Brooklyn Dodgers, to whom they lost.
