Biddenden, England is a small town of 1500 people, with a history of nine hundred years. Each Easter Monday, old people, widows, widowers, and others living on small incomes take part in a ceremony called Chulkhurst Charity. Each person receives a portion of bread and cheese as well as rock-hard biscuits on which are imprinted figures of Siamese twins.
The customs dates from the death of Eliza and Mary, the Chulkhurst twins, in 1134. Known as the Biddenden maids, these Siamese twins, born in 1100, were joined at the hips and shoulders. At age thirty-four, one of them died. The other refused to be parted from her and also died a few hours later.
