Repetitive compounds can be subcategorized into 3 types:
1. Reduplicative compounds: are the compounds in which the second element is the proper repetition of the first element “ with intensifying effect”
Drip-drip: sound of rain drops dripping down from a tree, the roof
Tap-tap: sound of quick light blows
Hush-hush: very secret or confidential
Fifty-fifty: 50 - 50
Pooh-pooh: sound to express contempt (Khinh thuong)
Blah-blah: nonsense
Ex: Should he give me half a mintute of blah-blah or tell me what has been passing through his mind
Quack-quack:= duck
Pops-pops:= father
Pretty-pretty
Goody-goody:
n): ke lam ra ve dao duc de lay long nguoi khac.
Ex; You’re such a goody-goody
Never-never: thue mua = hire
2. Abblaut compounds are twin forms consisting of one basic morpheme (usually the second).@-)@-)@-)@-)
Chit-chat (n) :
Tittle-tattle (n): Silly or trivial talk.
(v): talk about unimportant things
Shilly-shally (v) : luong lu hesitate
Dilly-dally(v): waste time
Knick-knack(s) (n) : do lat vat = nicknacks
