- loại bỏ những chất không mong muốn trong 1 hỗn hợp.
Vd: Những hạt gạo lép bị lọc (refine) ra khỏi các hạt gạo tốt.

filter có nghĩa:
- Lọc chất khí, chất lỏng để loại bỏ chất rắn thừa hoặc không mong muốn.
Vd: Nước được lọc để loại bỏ hết cát trong đó.

Sự khác biệt đầu tiên là từ loại và cái thứ hai về mặt nghĩa : refine là lọc một thứ ra khỏi có hỗn hợp còn filtration là lọc tạp chất ra khỏi hỗn hợp là lấy phần còn lại trong hỗn hợp làm thành phẩm.
Hơn thế nữa refine thường sẽ có sử dụng chất hoá học còn filtration thiên về vật lý
