I work for a web-based outfit – a very professional setup indeed, I’ve discovered, with several freelancers on the books and four in-house writers, me being one. The website itself is striving to build its name and I suppose that’s what led to my being headhunted really. They knew my work well from years of regular freelance writing for publications here and abroad. That said, as the last one in round here, I tend to get the supposed short straw sometimes in terms of destinations – I regularly get some isolated location out in the wilderness or halfway up a remote mountain - hardly the 5-star hotels some of the others go to. Little do they know that, being a loner, I’d be miserable if not for the time I spend away from it all every now and again. I’m more than glad to get back and see my family and everything but I do keep my little secret from the others. Still, I have a lot of independence in other ways. The funny thing about being head-hunted was that the owner was so keen to get me onboard, it felt like I could’ve pretty much named my terms. With the salary, I actually did. All in all, I’m happy here and, at the end of the day, I think I provide the style of journalism they’re after.
