I want to tell you about what I did last month. As part of my marine biology course, I got a two-week placement with a team of researchers who are studying dolphins off the east coast of Scotland. As we all know, species like dolphins are finding it increasingly difficult to survive, thanks to rising levels of pollution, aggressive fishing methods and other local factors. Talking to the members of the team, these issues were clearly a worry. The researchers were an amazing bunch of people - really devoted to their work and willing to go out in their tiny boats in all weathers to observe the dolphins. Actually, I was rather anxious about this aspect at first as I'm not a great sailor, but the thrill of seeing the dolphins so close to the boat soon took over and you find that you hardly notice the conditions. I had a really great time and if you're still hesitating about which direction to go in, you couldn't do better than choose this field. It'll take you to amazing places and it's really varied. For instance, one of the things I did in Scotland was help to make a film about the dolphins. The plan is to show it in schools and local wildlife associations to help fund future work with these wonderful creatures. As you can imagine donations are always needed.
