You could say I’m a fan of reality TV shows. Although I’m not crazy about the ones that are basically talent shows, and I’m not interested in the ones about the lives of celebrities either. And I can see how people might be bored by the ones about furniture making or gardening. Still, when reality TV is done well, it’s an opportunity to see authentic feelings and interactions of ordinary people with problems to solve, and I guess that’s what I’m into. Shows in which people form alliances and try to get rid of other people are really interesting to me, or shows that are about the difficulties people have living together are great, because you get to see and hear people talk about real problems. Lately the shows I’ve been watching don’t seem to last very long, but I’m fine with moving on to a new one when the one I’ve been watching ends. But over the years I’ve noticed a trend where the interactions between people on some shows don’t really seem authentic. They kind of seem scripted or prearranged somehow. I think that’s really bad, because it goes against what reality TV is all about, you know, just like the name says, reality TV. If it’s not that, I think they should call it something different.
