Read the text and select five true statements.
With so much change over the last two decades due to technological revolutions occurring almost every day, educational establishments around the world are having to move with the times to provide a highly skilled and valuable workforce for the global economy. In Britain there has been a constant debate over the last decade about the failings of education to keep up with the world of employment.
Every year young graduates leave university expecting to walk into a job at high speed. Unfortunately, the global recession has made that very diffcult, although it is even worse for those people who do not attend higher education.
Surprisingly, some scholars believe that it’s not always necessary to have a degree to get a good job, despite the fact that this rather misguided view contradicts reality. Figures show that, although a lot of graduates are unemployed, there are far more people without degrees who are unable to fnd work. Technology now requires a high level of specialised skills and because there are so few graduates with these skills, companies are having to offer high salaries to attract them, so the disparity in pay between the highly-skilled and the low-skilled is widening every day, leading to further unemployment.
The answer, therefore, seems to be that business and educational planners should work in tandem to develop the most appropriate education for students around the world.
1 Education has benefited greatly from technology.
2 There is concern about the current value of education in the UK.
3 Graduates’ expectations are at odds with reality.
4 The economic situation around the world has provided many job opportunities.
5 Non-graduates are enrolling in higher education.
6 There is a school of thought that good jobs are not out of reach of non-graduates.
7 Unemployment figures provide evidence that the level of education makes little difference to employment numbers.
8 Too many highly skilled IT experts are chasing too few jobs.
9 Low-skilled workers have increasingly fewer options.
10 The future of education is likely to be established with the help of industry and commerce.
