a) $x - 1 + x^{n + 3} - x^n = x - 1 + x^n(x^3 - 1) = x - 1 + x^n(x - 1)(x^2 + x + 1)$

$= (x - 1)(x^{2 + n} + x^{n + 1} + x^n + 1)$

b) $(a + b + c)^3 - a^3 - b^3 - c^3$

$= (a + b)^3 + c^3 + 3c(a + b)(a + b + c) - a^3 - b^3 - c^3$

$= a^3 + b^3 + c^3 + 3ab(a + b) + 3c(a + b)(a + b + c) - a^3 - b^3 - c^3$

$= 3ab(a + b) + 3c(a + b)(a + b + c)$

$= 3(a + b)(ab + ac + bc + c^2)$

$= 3(a + b).[a(b + c) + c(b + c)] = 3(a + b)(a + c)(b + c)$
