Making Suggestions ( Đưa ra ý kiến, đề nghị)
I/ Example:
- You could use a caller ID to see who is calling on the telephone.
- You can have them send you information by mail.
Explanation: Can and could are used to offer suggestions when more than one choice is acceptable. (Can và could được dùng để đưa ra ý kiến khi có nhiều hơn một lựa chọn có thể chấp nhận được.)
II/ Example:
- You should always be careful of strange callers.
- You shouldn't give out your credit card number.
- You ought to inform the phone company if you receive strange phone calls.
Explanation: Should and ought to are used to when you feel that there is only right way. (Should và ought to được sử dụng khi bạn cảm thấy đó là đề nghị, ý kiến đúng duy nhất.)
Language Notes:
1/ Can and could have the same meaning in offering suggestions. (Can và could có ý nghĩa giống nhau trong việc đưa ra đề nghị.) Could does not have a past meaning in offering suggestions. (Could không mang nghĩa quá khứ trong việc đưa ra đề nghị.)
2/ Ought is always followed by the infinitive (to + verb) (Ought luôn được đi kèm bởi to + verb.)
3/ Avoid the use of ought to in negative and question form. (Tránh việc sử dụng ought to theo nghĩa tiêu cực và trong câu hỏi.) Use should instead. (Dùng should thay vì ought to.)

1. The teacher said that I (can / should) write my paper on any project.
2. He is very sick with the flu. He (can / ought to) stay in the bed.
