This paper discusses some of the natural disasters and damage caused by disaster in Vietnam. Vietnam’s geographic position and topographic condition form special characteristics resulting in serious and diversified disasters. Natural disasters occur almost every year in Vietnam. There are typical disasters in each season and particular characteristics in each region. Vietnam suffers from many kinds of disasters, such as: flood, storm, tropical depression, storm surge, inundation, whirlwind, flash flood, river bank and coastline erosion, hail rain, drought, landslide and forest fire. Over a recent 10 year period (1997-2006), natural disasters such as typhoons, floods and droughts have caused substantial losses, including over 5000 missing and dead people, and asset damage equivalent to 1 % of GDP. Natural disasters in Vietnam have been increasingly severe in terms of magnitude, frequency and volatility.
