The Young Pioneers can not only be described as individuals who moved out west, but in a broader, yet more meaningful description as people who were the first to accomplish a determined feat. Pioneering was not just about building a new home in a different state, but more about being the first to try and survive in the western lands. Pioneering also meant taking advantage of new opportunities. Without the developed backbone that a community provided for residents, western pioneers often lived alone or simply with their families. There were no other people to help out with work and chores, and there was no place to turn to for other help. This meant that for most families the women and children were required to help with a substantial share of the work in order to accomplish every task. This also meant that where there were communities established there were less people there and more opportunities for women to work and make a difference.
