The sound of babies crying
Have you ever wondered why it is so hard to ignore the sound of a crying baby? (1) ______ who has found themselves on a plane or train next to a baby in distress will recognise the feeling. Research by Dr Katie Young and Dr Christine Parsons from Oxford University suggests that our brains are programmed to respond strongly to that sound, no (2) _____ matter how hard we try to block it out.
The researchers subjected 30 people to (3) _____ recordings of babies and adults crying as well as various animal distress noises, (4) _____ them dogs whining and cats mewing, and scanned the listeners’ brains.
The scans revealed that the participants’ brains responded quickly to all the noises, but only processed significant amounts of emotions in the (5) _____ of the babies’ cries. Not a single (6) _____ of the participants was a parent, yet they all responded in the same way.
The researchers suggest that this brain activity is highly (7) _____ to be a fundamental response present in all of us, (8) _____ of parental status, something perhaps to consider when you are next trapped with a screaming infant.
