what's workgroup computing?
Everyone has a different definition for workgroup computing. Some say it's a new category of applications called groupware. Others say workgroup computing requires new systems infrastructures or radically different user environments. Still others claim customers need to adopt new databases and data structures to develop workgroup computing solutions. A consistent theme is that worgroup computing solutions. A consistent theme is that workgroup computing is revolutionary new technology.
I've always believed that any definition of workgroup computing should be based on an understanding of people and how they work together. Using information technology and computers to help people work together more productively is what workgroup computing is all about. Although most people today use personal computer applications to carry out individual work and responsibilities, their work almost always is part of a larger organizational process. Virtually any process that involves a group of people collaborating on work is by definition a workgroup activity.
Workgroup computing should be a natural and easily understood extension of the applications and tools customers already have, rather than a separate product category. What they're missing is a strategy to put their resources together in customized workgroup computing solutions. What customers, application developers and solution providers need is an open development platform on which to build optimal, customized workgroup computing solutions.
Microsoft's workgroup computing strategy is based on an open, evolutionary and solutions - based approach to making it easier for people to work together. We are investing in Microsoft Windows, applications and services to provide workgroup and enterprise solutions to customers.
The key components of our workgroup computing strategy are: extending the operating system to provide an open workgroup computing foundation; providing extensive open APIs; incorporating workgroup capabilities in key application; providing general - purpose database technology to leverage existing data and build powerful customized solutions; delivering products that address common problems; and providing development tools and investing in an infrastructure to help customers develop and implement workgroup computing solutions.
Operating systems will evolve in the 1990s to incorporate fundamental workgroup services, which will make all applications "workgroup applications". Thers are several reasons that the operating system is the best place to address fundamental workgroup computing problems, rather than the application environment.
First, it does not make sense from a practical or customer investment standpoint to have a separate class of applications for users to work with other people. The only way to ensure that all applications can evolve and become workgroup - enabled is to make basic services, such as file sharing and messaging, a part of the operating system.
Second, customers want and need freedom of choice. When the operating system incorporates basic workgroup services and supports abstraction layers and open APIs, customers can separate their client and server decisions and choose applications that best suit their needs while leveraging their existing investments in their infrastructure. The freedom of choice created by open interfaces in the operating system also will drive the development of new, innovative applications and solutions.
Microsoft's workgroup computing strategy encompasses technology from all our product groups. We believe customers want the flexibility to mix and match the best computing solutions. We are investing in Windows, applications and services to make it easier for users to work together and for customers to build custom workgroup and enterprise solutions. Our strategy has three fundamental objectives:
+ Enable solutions for real customer problems and workgroup activities.
+ Provide an open architecture and development platform for customers, application developers and solution providers.
+ Evolve the operating system and applications to include workgroup capability.
embedding fundamental workgroup services in the operating system and providing a truly open development platform will ensure that customers can protect themselves from getting locked into a single vendor's proprietary application environment.

Discussion Questions
1. How does Bill Gates define workgroup computing?
2. Explain how operating system features provide a foundation for Gates's view of workgroup computing.
3. Gates proposes that the workgroup computing platform should include the same applications that the user alreadu uses for personal purposes. Evaluate this proposal. What are the pros and cons of this approach as compared to having separate programs for group work?
4, This discussion of workgroup computing doesn't mention meeting support. Why do you think Gates omitted this topic?
