The suggested key provided by my English teacher contains many inaccuracies. :D
I do not think "expressionlessly" is a suitable word for the gap but my teacher said so (though her "detailed" explanation was not really up to the mark). :-<

To a certain extent, I believe that expressionless is the best answer for this gap with regard to both contextual information and grammar.

I'm afraid that the suggested key for the previous exercise can not be post on schedule. :-< Due to the lack of time, it is quite hard for me to keep giving out exercises and their suggested keys with a strict adherence to the schedule. Therefore, it will be much better if tm27 and other (potential :)) :-< ) participants can share your own academic materials.

You contributions will be welcomed and deeply appreciated.

The stem should have been "LASH" instead of "BACK".

"feedback" and even "drawbacks" are acceptable in the sentence.

Provoke: stimulate, give a rise to a particular reaction or emotion, especially the a strong and unwelcomed one. (GST)

Provoke feedbacks sounds weird to me. I doubt about the validity of your assertment.

Btw, the stem should have been lash. It was actually a typo. :D

Native speakers still use "provoke feedback" and "provoke drawback", my dear. You can refer to this as an example: http://www.cgd.ucar.edu/nar/2006/ccr/permafrost.html

Sometimes, the test-makers don't use the words in official dictionaries. Words like "famine-stricken", "refrigerant",... are still used in correct English and tests though they don't appear in dictionaries, that is to say it's not because such phrases aren't referred in dictionaries that we cannot use them.

"backlash" is the best choice, and the others are acceptable if the stem is "back" and the context is not restricted.

It's not the matter of whether this expression is enumerated in official dictionaries or not. I know that dictionaries and grammar books will never be able to cover all English usage examples or to keep up with the exponential growth of contemporary language.

It's just because when I assessed this expression's popularity by some advanced searching tools, the results were not really up to the mark. Considering such statistics, it is quite hard for me to pass judgement on the correctness of this expression. I did not say that we could not use it. I just noted that I was not certain about its academic accuracy due to the sufficiency of reliable references.

Overall, it's true that "provoke feedback" is often used in certain context. Therefore, to some extent, I agree with you about its suitability for the gap.
