Challenge 2: Reading comprehension + describing a picture
Task 1: Read and choose

Fog is a cloud in contact with or just above the surface of land or sea. It can be a major environmental hazard. Fog on highways can cause chain-reaction accidents involving dozens of cars. Delays and shutdowns at airports can cause economic losses to airlines and inconveniences to thousands of travelers. Fog at sea has always been a danger to navigation. Today, with supertankers carrying vast quantities of oil, fog increases the possibility of catastrophic oil spills.
The most common type of fog, radiation fog, forms at night, when moist air near the ground loses warmth through radiation on a clear night. This type of fog often occurs in valleys, such as California's San Joaquin Valley. Another common type, advection fog, results from the movement of warm, wet air over cold ground. The air loses temperature to the ground and condensation sets in. This type of fog often occurs along the California coast and the shores of the Great Lakes. Advection fog also forms when air associated with a warm ocean current blows across the surface of a cold current. The thick fogs of the Grand Banks of Newfoundland, Canada, are largely of this origin; because here the Labrador Current comes in contact with the warm Gulf Stream.
Two other types of fog are somewhat more unusual. Frontal fog occurs when two fronts of different temperatures meet, and rain from the warm front falls into the colder one, saturating the air. Steam fog appears when cold air picks up moisture by moving other warmer water.
1. The first paragraph focuses on which aspect of fog?
A. its dangers

Task 3: Read and choose
Over the past decade, e-books have revolutionized the way people consume written information. It will probably come as no surprise that the total global sales number continues to rise each year. There are several reasons why readers are buying more e-books. For starters, reading a lengthy e-book in front of your computer isn't the most comfortable thing to do. But since tablet sales have exploded, readers can now relax and read their favorite e-books in bed or on the beach. Many e-books are often sold at lower prices than traditional books. Since there is almost zero cost for producing e-books, some authors are offering their novels at lower prices. Another factor is convenience. In the past, keeping a large book collection meant setting aside a lot of extra space in one's home. With e-books, it is now possible for readers to carry a portable library, which contains thousands of books. To really understand the e-book market, it is important to keep up with national trends.
Recent data suggests that the e-book markets in the US and the UK have matured. In both of these countries, e-book sales account for roughly 20 percent of overall book sales. Although that percentage continues to increase, it is going up at a slower rate than in the past.
The popularity of e-books has exploded in Russia. In one poll, 70 percent of Russians claim to have read at least one e-book. However, publishers are not too pleased with this news because approximately 92 percent of e-books in Russia are acquired illegally.
In France, consumers don't appear to be too keen on e-books at this time. Although in 2012, e-book sales comprised about 3 percent of the market, it is predicted that this number will increase at a very slow pace. Some French people believe that reading e-books on small screens is uncomfortable. Others say that the French are a cultural exception, as they like the feeling of holding a dusty old physical book. This demonstrates that no matter how popular e-books get, it is unlikely that traditional books will disappear anytime soon.
16. This year e-book sales in the US and the UK will probably _____.
A. increase drastically
B. keep going up
C. stay the same
D. start to decline
17. Which of the following is NOT a reason why e-books became popular worldwide?
A. People can now store more books easily.
B. Reading e-books recently became more comfortable.
C. Most popular novels are only offered as e-books.
D. A new type of reading device was invented.
18. The phrase "account for" in paragraph 2 is closest in meaning to _____.
A. know what has happened
B. are the explanation for
C. form the total of
D. are a particular part of
19. Why are publishers unhappy about the popularity of e-books in Russia?
A. The quality of e-books is poor.
B. Customers are not paying for them.
C. More people are returning to traditional books.
D. Only a small percentage of people read e-books.

If you see this picture, you can find out a perialpine lake in France. The lake's name is Lake Annecy. Lake Annecy is one of the most marvelous sightseeings in the world. The scene is amazing: you can see a blue of lake water, high mountains, a green of grass,... Besides that, it has a small boat in the middle. That's great to organize a lot of interesting activities in that place, such as: summer holiday, camping,... In this picture, I think they have a summer camp near Lake Annecy. You can see the children from 4 to 8-year-old are trying to catch lots of things and laughing innocently. They are happy because they have a great time. I want you to go on a trip here at least once to breathe in the cool fresh air with your relatives and friends.

But since tablet sales have exploded, readers can now relax and read their favourite e-books in bed or on the beach.
This demonstrates that no matter how popular e-books get, it is unlikely that traditional books will disappear any time soon.
16. This year e-book sales in the US and the UK will probably _____.
A. increase drastically
.B. keep going up
C. stay the same
D. start to decline
17. Which of the following is NOT a reason why e-books became popular worldwide?
A. People can now store more books easily.
B. Reading e-books recently became more comfortable.
C. Most popular novels are only offered as e-books.
.D. A new type of reading device was invented.
18. The phrase "account for" in paragraph 2 is closest in meaning to _____.
A. know what has happened
B. are the explanation for
.C. form the total of
D. are a particular part of
19. Why are publishers unhappy about the popularity of e-books in Russia?
A. The quality of e-books is poor.
B. Customers are not paying for them.
C. More people are returning to traditional books.
.D. Only a small percentage of people read e-books.

Where do you often go in your vacation? For me, Lake Annecy will be the best choice if you want to go abroad and escape from the heat of thetropical region. It is world famous for its natural beauty and untouched scenery. It's known as ''Europe's cleanest lake'' because of strict environmental regulations introduced in the 1960s and an attractive tourist destination known for its swimming and water sports such as scuba diving, swimming and diving. As you see in the picture, Lake Annecy is surrounded by the majestic mountains. Some people are sunbathing and some are having picnics. The scenery is quiet peaceful, the weather is always fine and everything there seems to move slowly. It's not only makes us chill out but also gets closer to nature. About the children, I think they won a game, tossed their toys to the ball and shouted happily. In conclusion, I'm sure this is the best place for us to enjoy our holiday with our family, relatives or friends.

A. its dangers
B. its composition
C. its beauty
D. its causes
2. The word "catastrophic' is closest in meaning to

D. warm
5. The author organizes the discussion of the different types of fog according to
A. their geographic locations

C. the types of problems they cause
D. their relative frequency
6. The author of the passage is probably an expert in the filed of
A. physics

The photo taken at a beautiful lake depicts lots of children trying to catch many different toys. As I know, they are having a summer camp in Lake Annecy, France, where is known as "Europe's cleanest lake". I like the setting here very much. When I look at this photo, I just want to shout: "So great".You can see many high mountains, fresh lake, tall trees behind the children. In the ground, there is no rubbish so it makes me feel pleased and wants to come here right now.In the center of the picture, the children look very excited and joyful when playing together in a beautiful weather. There is nothing which is more wonderful than sitting on the grass with friends, romping happily and listening to the sound of waves. All in all, I want to emphasize the important of parents to children and how they help children relax after studying hard. It is a perfect picture both of imagines and content. Let's come there one day!!!

Hello everyone ! After the long summer camp in Annecy Lake, my cousin took a beautiful picture for me. Look at this picture, it is the most beautiful picture they have last summer camping. Look at the picture ,in the camping, the weather is very beautiful ,and there are too many children, they are very friendly. They are playing many games and experience a lot of fun collective activities, these games are making us more knowledgeable about each other better and also somewhat know more about the cultural traditions of countries. Look at the picture, far away, the man is sunbathing on green lawn .And they are trying to catch many different toys. It is an interesting camping so I hope I will have a camping in Annecy Lake in the future.

Challenge 2: Write a paragraph about Tet holiday.
Hello every one!
My name is Anh Ky. I'm fourteen years old. I'm from HCM City, Vietnam. I'm very proud because i live in a traditional country such as mine. Vietnam has a lot of national and family festivals, including Tet. Lunar New Year Festival often falls between late January and early February. Officially, the festival includes the 1st, 2nd and 3rd day in Lunar Calendar. It's a celebration of fortune and happiness and one of the largest holiday in Vietnam. Tet is also an occasion for every Vietnamese to have a good time while thinking about the last year and the next year, get people in your family together in warm atmosphere. We usually spend nearly a week preparing for this holiday. Everyone prepare carefully local specialities, such as Round Sticky Rice Cake, Vietnam sausage,...Houses are cleaned and then nicely furnished in the hopes of getting rids of the last year's bad lucks. Then we decorate our house with beautiful flowers and trees (Kumquat trees, yellow appricot blossom...). We make our house more great and we think they can bring happiness, luckiness and prospersity in New Year. Many bussiness and public companies are covered with arsty banners with caligraphy. On the last day of lunar year, an announcing cult is performed to invite the dead forefathers to return home in order to have a great holiday with your family. When the day is January 1st, Tet starts. The weather usually not cold with the drizzle. Streets in the city are so quiet, that make me peaceful. In every house, there are a big tree with many lovely flowers and plants. Spring fairs are organized, streets and public buildings are brightly decorated and almost all shops are crowded with people shopping for Tet. All members in your family gather together and have some parties to celebrate this holiday. At home, every is tidied, special food is cooked, offerings of food, fresh water, flowers and betel are made on the family altar with burning joss- sticks scenting the air. Some tradional dishes are eaten, that's a great time. We usually exchange New Year's wishes to our family, our relatives, our friends,..... We also wish the other propersity, good luck and good health. I love this holiday because I can receive lucky money. First-footing is made when the lucky visitor comes and children are given lucky money wrapped in a red tiny envelope. Some people go to the pagoda in order to visit their forefather and pray for good things for the coming new year. The others gather on the street and make as much noise using firecrackers, drums, anything they can think of ward off evil spirits and bad lucks. The women usually wear Ao Dai to go to spring festivals to see and join a lot of activities. There is a funny thing that people try to avoid argument or saying any bad things at Tet. In conclusion, Tet is the most interesting holiday with many traditional customs and activities.

Challenge 2: Write a paragraph about Tet holiday.
Tet is an important Vietnamese holiday, it usually starts in January or February. Maybe the Tet holidays are for many kids in the market where they find fun and excitement. . But the Lunar New Year is what they expect more than ever. Tet holiday, Tet holiday in a market really meaningful and memorable to start a new year.Everyone prepared before Tet many things such as banh chung, house cleaning, home decoration, fireworks, ... and people also go to pagodas, visit relatives, give each other good wishes, .. to have a happy new year.Spring comes, Tet knocks of every home, joy doubles, happiness multiply. Children wait more than Tet holiday than adults. The adults are happy, but there are more things to worry about, more preparation and more money. But children do not care about that, because Tet is a dip so that we have more new clothes, receive lucky money, gifts do not eat out and do not have to study. Maybe that's what every kid is interested in.I do not know how the New Year in other places but the Tet holiday in my country is always full of laughter and blessing each other a new year of peace and prosperity. On the small road still smells of stone, the grass covered the way has been cleaned by the hamlet. Because in my neighborhood every 30 Tet holiday every house is going to sweep out the village lanes to prepare for Tet. Everyone is eager and hard-working, no one's humming, everyone is enthusiastic, enthusiastic. We do not go to school, but for a while to get away, go to play. The national flag hung high on a bright red roof, fluttering between the sky to create a cheerful atmosphere.Perhaps spring makes the atmosphere of every house warm and peaceful. Although the weather is still cold, the early morning dew still cling to the tree branches, but the smile of everyone is always on the lips.New Year's Eve, children are eager, choose the most beautiful clothes and the latest to wear, to go play, to wish grandparents. Every child would find a bag with a large and large bag to hold candy and money lazy. That is also what I expected during the New Year.

Challenge 2: Write a paragraph about Tet holiday.
A year has four seasons: Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter. Each season has its own charms and attractions. For example, Spring is the season which offers beautiful flowers and warm weather. Summer is the season of nice holidays when we can enjoys lots of outdoor activities such as camping, swimming, fishing, etc. Autumn is so beautiful with its ideal weather while Winter can give us such delight as gathering by a fire to chat or tell each other funny stories. As far as I am concerned, I like Spring best because in this season, there is a special holiday throughout the year that contains both important cultural and spiritual values, it is Tet holiday-the occasion expected the most by Vietnamese people every year. Tet usually takes place in late January and early February according to the lunar calendar. It is one of the most well-known traditions of Viet Nam.As can be seen, Tet is celebrated to see off the old year with bad luck and illness then welcome the happiness and luck in the new year. Tet is a time for family members who live apart try to be together. Despite of their business, people get their time with their own family for preparing and celebrating Tet together. Moreover, Tet is the occasion for descendants to commemorate ancestors that expresses the elevated traditional culture passed from through Vietnamese generations. People have been celebrating this occasion for thousand years. We will decorate our houses, prepare many things and we also make "chưng" cake, "tét" cake before Tet. At 24 o’clock on the 30th of the 12th lunar month, the Old Year is replaced on the New Year. At that time,Everyone goes out to see fireworks.Almost people pray for a prosperous and Happy New Year. During 3 days of Tet, there are numerous popular customs of Vietnamese people. We often visit their relatives, friends to give them best wishes. We usually go to pagoda, temple to pray for good things, too. Tet is one of special occasions that families can gather together so it is easy to understand why everyone expects this festival so much. Another thing we usually do at Tet, children will get "lucky money" with the hope that it will bring fortune to them. In addition, Tet holiday is very important to me and also to all Vietnamese citizens. It is a great time to think about what we have done in the previous year to make good plans for the upcoming year.

Challenge 2: Write a paragraph about Tet holiday.
Bài làm
Tet, the biggest festival in Vietnam, is celebrated around the last of January an the beginning of February. To welcome Tet, Vietnamese people make many tasty traditional dishes, clean and decorate their houses with plants and flowers. Also, clothes are bought to wear, especially ''ao dai'' for both men and women. Peach blossom is beatified at Tet while apricot blossom in the south, the kumquat tree is popular throughout the country. The most important food includes chung cakes, sausages, boiled chicken, spring rolls, and sticky rice. Chung cake is made of sticky rice, green beans, pork and other species, wrapped in green leaves;therefore, this cake needs lots of preparation. It can be kept for a long time.Other significant foods that can't be missed to worship the ancestor are sausages, spring rolls, and sticky rice. Because sausages are difficult to make, people often buy them from famous suppliers. However, sticky rice and spring rolls are easier to prepare and must be served immediately after they're cooked, so they are often made at home. Vietnamese people believe that at Tet people should present rice to wish for enough food, red fruits for happiness. Dogs are lucky animals. Their barking sounds like 'gold'. But one shouldn't present a cat because its cry sounds like the Vietnamese word for poverty. Don't eat shrimps. They move backwards and you will not succeed in the New Year. On New Year's Eve, we gather together to give best wishes to each other; or we go out with friends. When the clock strikes midnight, colorful fireworks light up the sky. Everybody is cheering and singing happily. On the fist day of Tet, we getting up we dress beautifully and go to visit our relatives,, the adults give lucky money wrapped in red tiny envelopes. In conclusion, Tet is a time for family and friends reunions.

What festival do you like best? With me, Tet is my favorite festival. It is a big festival all countries in the world. It often celebrated every year in the first of January in the lunar calendar. At Tet, there are many interesting activities to do. To celebrate Tet, every people cook many foods and decorate their house, too. Children wear many beautiful closes. HOCMAI Forum
ROUND 4
Challenge 1:
I think, wearing school uniforms has many benefits for students. First, wearing uniforms will help students not be discriminated rich and poor. Rich or poor students must wear the same clothes to school, and poor students will not be confused with their peers. Second, students in uniform look very nice and unobtrusive. The uniforms are beautifully designed so that the student can wear comfortably. Third, students will not take time to choose clothes to school. This will help students concentrate on learning instead of thinking how they will wear, what to wear to school. Fourth, uniforms will help students save money shopping. They will not spend too much money to buy clothes because they always have to wear uniforms to school. Lastly, thanks to the uniforms we can know which school they are and their schoolmates can. Get to know each other on that trait.
Challenge 2:
At one time inadvertently saw people say HOCMAI Forum is a really interesting and educational forum, I decided to register for the forum. During my time as a forum member, I really participated in many minigames, but "The English" is a contest I feel most meaningful, during the contest she was somewhat aware more about English box - one of the most popular forums. I noticed that the English box has a lot of strengths. First, the English box is a big box on the forum and plays a huge role in the progress of the Forum and also meet the increasing demand for foreign languages. Secondly, the English box also has a competent, enthusiastic and regular forum staff to answer the questions of members. Third, the box usually hosts many minigames and training topics and skill enhancements. Besides the advantages mentioned above, the box also has many disadvantages such as the status of the wrong box is still many, the box is still quite messy.
As we see, English box has many advantages still exist many disadvantages and how to overcome the disadvantages is also a difficult problem for us. So how to overcome it? First of all, the members of the forum need to explain more about the problem members. Secondly, the members of the Management Board need to absorb the comments of the members. Third, avoid the phenomenon of the topic of the old Mod abandoned nobody replaced. Finally, the board must regularly check the activities of the box for the timely and timely processing of infringing posts. Really English box has helped me a lot in learning and I feel very proud and proud to be a member of the forum and I hope your comments will contribute to the box on England one day up.
Thanks for reading !
