BRING ON THE CLOWNS

Mention the word ‘jester’ and the (0)_______imagination________ (IMAGINE) conjures up a
picture of a scampering playful fellow hired for the (1)_______________________ (AMUSE) of
others. As a rule, the jester was in the service of a particular monarch, and it was his job to
(2)_______________________ (SURE) that the king and his court were kept in high spirits.
(3)_______________________ (TRADITION), court clowns were not valued for their intellectual
humour, but for their childish frivolity and rather (4)_______________________ (RESPECT) brand
of slapstick comedy. While His Royal Highness was in a good mood, the jester enjoyed the honour
of being permitted to say or do almost anything. However, his chosen occupation did have its
(5)_____________________ (ADVANTAGE) if the king was having a bad day, the jester could very
well be (6)______________________ (HEAD) or receive some other form of severe punishment
for his entertaining efforts, which somewhat made the job (7)_______________________
(REWARD).

FINDING FRIENDS

‘True friends are hard to find,’ is a statement that is (8)_______________________
(DISPUTE) by most people. One may have every reason in the world to feel that some friendships
(9)_______________________ (SIMPLE) aren’t worth maintaining.
Sharon, a student of psychology, considers herself a(n) (10)_______________________
(SOCIETY) person and has always liked to have a close circle of friends around her. Because of
this, she was greatly (11)_______________________ (SAD) when a job transfer meant that she
would have to move halfway across the country. Not having been in her new
(12)_______________________ (RESIDE) for more than two days, Sharon was surprised and
(13)_______________________ (PLEASURE) to find a bunch of flowers on her doorstep one
evening. As the bouquet had no card attached, it remained a mystery as to who might have left it
there.
It turned out, however, that Sharon didn’t have to wait long to have the mystery
(14)_______________________ (SOLUTION). A week later, as she was gardening, a woman
opened the gate and asked Sharon if she needed any help. Sharon expressed her
(15)_______________________ (GRATEFUL) to Rose, as she turned out to be called, and they
quickly struck up a conversation about the best way to go about planting herbs. Before long, the
two became quite good friends, going out on Friday evenings to (16)_______________________
(DINNER) at a local restaurant or see a film.
Sharon noticed that something was (17)_______________________ (MISS) after the
friendship had been going on for about a month when Ruth started dropping by
(18)_______________________ (INVITE), criticising Shirley’s appearance and insulting her
intelligence. Naturally, Sharon was (19)_______________________ (SET) about this and asked
Rose to stop her (20)_______________________ (ACCEPT) behaviour. Rose persisted, however,
and in the end, Sharon had to bluntly end the relationship. To use Sharon’s words, ‘With friends
like Rose, one doesn’t need enemies!’

LUNAR NEW YEAR

Ever since the French (21)_______________________ (INVADE), the Eastern roots and
Western reality never stopped elbowing each other to win over the Vietnamese populace. But now
a positive decision shows that the East with its long traditions must be respected and not
(22)_______________________ (LOOK) on the international level.
The United Nations General Assembly in late December (23)_______________________
(KNOWLEDGE) the significance of the Lunar New Year and invited the UN agencies at
(24)_______________________ (QUARTER) and other duty stations to avoid holding meetings on
the Lunar New Year. This official recognition by a world organisation shows not only the
contribution of Oriental culture to the world, but also puts an end to a
(25)_______________________ (SEEM) never-ending dispute of whether to keep celebrating the
Lunar New Year or only celebrate the Gregorian New Year.
The Lunar New Year advocates tend to respect traditions and follow customs from their
(26)_______________________ (FATHER) for thousands of years. They claim that the age-old
traditions and customs, the good old days should not be fading and the lifestyle should never be
(27)_______________________ (WEST).
However, opponents argue that it’s a waste of resources to celebrate both the Gregorian New
Year and the Lunar New Year. It is a(n) (28)_______________________ (ROOT) tradition in our
culture, but we need to see that bad practices can hinder our people on an individual level, and
our country as a whole. Some of the bad habits on Lunar New Year include
(29)_______________________ (EAT) and getting drunk, drink-driving, burning firecrackers, and
intense gambling, either during the holiday, or even the whole first lunar month.
Too much swing will be good for neither society, mental health nor the economy. Having a
long holiday, like (30)_______________________ (PARTY) too much, could have a negative
impact. Even joy, or nostalgia for the good old days, needs to be consumed in moderation.
