V. READ THE FOLLOWING PASSAGE AND CHOOSE THE BEST ANSWERS TO THE QUESTIONS. (20 PTS)

The development of jazz can be seen as part of the larger continuum of American popular music, especially
dance music. In the twenties, jazz became the hottest new thing in dance music, much as ragtime had at the turn of
the century, and as would rhythm and blues in the fifties, rock in the fifties, and disco in the seventies.
But two characteristics distinguish jazz from other dance music. The first is improvisation, the changing of a
musical phrase according to the player’s inspiration. Like all artists, jazz musicians strive for an individual style, and
the improvise or paraphrase is a jazz musician’s main opportunity to display his or her individuality. In early jazz,
musicians often improvised melodies collectively, thus creating a kind of polyphony. There was little soloing as such,
although some New Orleans players, particularly cornet player Buddy Bolden, achieved local fame for their ability to
improvise a solo. Later the idea of the chorus-long or multichorus solo took hold. Louis Armstrong’s instrumental
brilliance, demonstrated through extended solos, was a major influence in this development. Even in the early
twenties, however, some jazz bands had featured soloists. Similarly, show orchestras and carnival bands often
included one or two such “get-off” musicians. Unimproved, completely structured jazz does exist, but the ability of the
best jazz musicians to create music of great cohesion and beauty during performance has been a hallmark of the
music and its major source of inspiration and change.
The second distinguishing characteristic of jazz is a rhythmic drive that was initially called “hot” and later
“swing”. In playing hot, a musician consciously departs from strict meter to create a relaxed sense of phrasing that
also emphasizes the underlying rhythms. (“Rough” tone and use of moderate vibrato also contributed to a hot
sound.) Not all jazz is hot, however, many early bands played unadorned published arrangements of popular songs.
Still, the proclivity to play hot distinguished the jazz musician from other instrumentalists.

Một số cấu trúc thường gặp

III.6. Một số mẫu câu thường gặp

1.1. Not only ..... but also (không những ... mà còn....)

S + verb + not only + noun/adj/adv + but also + noun/adj/adv
Hoặc:
S + not only verb + but also + verb
Robert is not only talented but also handsome.
He writes not only correctly but also neatly.
She can play not only the guitar but also the violin.
She not only plays the piano but also composes music.
Thành phần sau 'but also' thường quyết định thành phần sau 'not only'.
Incorrect: He is not only famous in Italy but also in Switzerland.
Correct: He is famous not only in Italy but also in Switzerland.
1.2. As well as (vừa ... vừa ...)

S + verb + noun/adj/adv + as well as + noun/adj/adv
Hoặc:
S + verb + as well as + verb
Ví dụ:
Robert is talented as well as handsome.
He writes correctly as well as neatly.
She plays the guitar as well as the violin.
Paul plays the piano as well as composes music.
Chú ý: Không được nhầm thành ngữ này với as well as của hiện tượng đồng chủ ngữ mang nghĩa cùng với.
The teacher, as well as her students, is going to the concert.
My cousins, as well as Tim, have a test tomorrow.
1.3. Both ..... and... (vừa ... vừa)

– Công thức dùng giống hệt như not only .... but also. Both chỉ được dùng với and, không được dùng với as well as.
Robert is both talented and handsome.
Paul both plays the piano and composes music.
2. Một số cấu trúc câu cầu khiến

2.2. To have/to get sth done = làm một việc gì bằng cách thuê người khác

I have my hair cut. (Tôi đi cắt tóc - chứ không phải tôi tự cắt)
I have my car washed. (Tôi mang xe đi rửa ngoài dịch vụ - không phải tự rửa)
Theo khuynh hướng này động từ to want và would like cũng có thể dùng với mẫu câu như vậy: To want/ would like Sth done. (ít dùng)
I want/ would like my car washed.
2.3. To make sb do sth = to force sb to do sth = Bắt buộc ai phải làm gì

Một số cấu trúc thường gặp

3. Lối nói phụ họa

John went to the mountains on his vacation, and we did too.
John went to the mountains on his vacation, and so did we.
I will be in Vietnam in May, and they will too.

She will wear a custom to the party, and so will we.
Picaso was a famous painter, and Rubens was too.
Picaso was a famous painter, and so was Rubens.
Affirmative statement (be) + and + S + verb + too
Affirmative statement (be) + and + so + verb + S
I am happy, and you are too.
I am happy, and so are you.
– Khi trong mệnh đề chính có một cụm trợ động từ + động từ], ví dụ will go, should do, has done, have written, must consider, ... thì các trợ động từ trong mệnh đề đó được dùng lại trong mệnh đề phụ.
They will work in the lab tomorrow, and you will too.
They will work in the lab tomorrow, and so will you.
Affirmative statement + and + S + do/does/did + too
Affirmative statement + and + so + do/does/did + S
Jane goes to that school, and my sister does too.
Jane goes to that school, and so does my sister.

Negative statement + and + S + negative auxiliary (or be) + either
Negative statement + and + neither + positive auxiliary (or be) + S
I didn't see Mary this morning, and John didn't either
I didn't see Mary this morning, and neither did John.

To do well at school, college or university you usually need to do well in exams. “All students hate exams” may be generalization, but it is fairly true one. None of them thought that the exam system was fair; to do well in an exam you simply had to be able to predict the questions which would be asked. This was the case that regards two students in my class at college. Both of them got an A grade. In fact, they both got Cs. The exam had tested us on questions which had come up the previous year. They had both amused that the same questions wouldn’t come up again, and hadn’t prepared for them.

D. “All students hate exams” is fairly true generalization.
64. Why did the two students in the writer’s class get C grades in the final exam?
A. Because the exam was really difficult.
B. Because they didn’t prepare for the questions that had come up the previous year.
C. Because they were dull students.
D. Because the questions weren’t in their lessons.
65. The writer’s main purpose of writing the passage is to ………………….
A. describe the importance of exams.

Little did I know that he was a compulsive liar.
At no time (= never) did I say I would accept late homework.

Never have I been more insulted!
Never in her life had she experienced this exhilarating emotion.
Seldom has he seen anything stranger.
(Hiếm khi anh ấy nhìn thấy một cái gì kì lạ hơn thế).
Seldom have I seen him looking so miserable.

Scarcely had I got out of bed when the doorbell rang.
(Hiếm khi chuông cửa reo mà tôi thức dậy).
No sooner had he finished dinner than she walked in the door.
(Khi anh ấy vừa mới ăn tối xong thì chị ta bước vào cửa).

2. Nhóm từ kết hợp sau “Only” như: only after, only when, only then…
Only after/only when/only then/only if + trợ động từ + S + V…
Only by + noun/V-ing + trợ động từ/ động từ khuyết thiếu + S + V….: chỉ bằng cách làm gì
Ví dụ:
Only then did I understand the problem.
(Chỉ sau lúc đó tôi mới hiểu ra được vấn đề).
Only by hard work will we be able to accomplish this great task.
Only by studying hard can you pass this exam.
Chú ý: nếu trong câu có hai mệnh đề, chúng ta dùng đảo ngữ ở mệnh đề thứ hai:
Only when you grow up, can you understand it.
Only if you tell me the truth, can I forgive you.
Only after the film started did I realise that I'd seen it before.

3. Nhóm từ: So, Such
So + tính từ + to be + Danh từ …

Ví dụ:
So strange was the situation that I couldn't sleep.
So difficult is the test that students need three months to prepare.
“Such + to be + Danh từ +…”
Ví dụ:
Such is the moment that all greats traverse.
(Thật là thời khắc trở ngại lớn lao).
Such is the stuff of dreams.
(Thật là một giấc mơ vô nghĩa).

4. Not only….but also…..:không những…….mà còn…..
Not only + trợ động từ + S +V + but also + S + V…
Ví dụ:
Not only does he study well, but also he sings well.

5. Một số cấu trúc khác
• In/ Under no circumstances: Dù trong bất cứ hoàn cảnh nào cũng không.
Under no circumstances should you lend him the money.
• On no account: Dù bất cứ lý do gì cũng không
On no accout must this switch be touched.
• Only in this way: Chỉ bằng cách này
Only in this way could the problem be solved
• In no way: Không sao có thể
In no way could I agree with you.
• By no means: Hoàn toàn không
By no means does he intend to criticize your idea.
• Negative ..., nor + auxiliary + S + V
He had no money, nor did he know anybody from whom he could borrow.
Clause of place/ order + main verb + S (no auxiliary)
In front of the museum is a statue.
First came the ambulance, then came the police.
Under the tree was lying one of the biggest men I had ever seen.
Directly in front of them stood a great castle.
On the grass sat an enormous frog.
Along the road came a strange procession.
Not a single word did he say.
• Các phó từ away ( = off ), down, in, off, out, over, round, up... có thể theo sau là một động từ chuyển động và sau đó là một danh từ làm chủ ngữ:
– Away/down/in/off/out/over/round/up...+ motion verb + noun/noun phrase as a subject.
Away went the runners.
Down fell a dozen of apples...
Away they went.
Round and round it flew.
– Trong tiếng Anh viết (written English) các ngữ giới từ mở đầu bằng các giới từ down, from, in, on, over, out of, round, up... có thể được theo sau ngay bởi động từ chỉ vị trí (crouch, hang, lie, sit, stand...) hoặc các dạng động từ chỉ chuyển động, các động từ như be born/ die/ live và một số dạng động từ khác.
From the rafters hung strings of onions.
In the doorway stood a man with a gun.
On a perch beside him sat a blue parrot.
Over the wall came a shower of stones.

*Chú ý: các ví dụ trên có thể diễn đạt bằng một V-ing mở đầu cho câu và động từ to be đảo lên trên chủ ngữ:
Hanging from the rafters were strings of onion.
Standing in the doorway was a man with a gun.
Sitting on a perch beside him was a blue parrot.

1. If....then :Nếu...thì
Ví dụ: If she can't come to us, then we will have to go and see her

If you want to learn a musical instrument, you have to practice
If you did not do much maths at school, you will find economics difficult to understand
If that was Marry, why didn't she stop and stay hello

3. If....should = If... happen to... = If... should happen to... diễn đạt sự không chắc chắn
Ví dụ: If you should happen to pass a supermarket, perhaps you could get some eggs (ngỗ nhỡ anh có tình cờ đi qua chợ có lẽ mua cho em ít đường)

4. If...was/were to...
If the boss was/were to come in now (= if the boss came in now), we would be in real trouble
What would we do if I was/were to lose my job?
- Hoặc có thể diễn đạt một ý lịch sự khi đưa ra lời đề nghị
Ví dụ: If you were to move your hair a bit,we could all sit down
Ví dụ: Correct: If I knew her name, I would tell you
Incorrect: If I was/were to know...

5. If it+ to be+ not+ for : Nếu không vì,nếu không nhờ vào.
-Thời hiện tại:
Ví dụ: If it wasn't/weren't for the children, that couple wouldn't have any thing to talk about.
Ví dụ: If it hadn't been for your help,I don't know what we would have done

Ví dụ: I wonder if we shouldn't ask the doctor to look at Mary

7. It would... if+ subject+ would...(sẽ là... nếu- không được dùng trong văn viết )
Ví dụ:
. It would be better if they would tell every body in advance.
How would we feel if this would happen to our family?

8. If...'d have...' have dùng trong văn nói không dùng trong văn viết ,diễn đạt điều kiện không thể xảy ra trong quá khứ.
Ví dụ: If I'd have known, I'd have told you
If she'd have recognized him it would have benn funny

9. If+ preposition+ noun/verb...(subject+ be bị lược bỏ)
Ví dụ: If in doubt, ask for help (= if you are in doubt)
If about to go on a long journey, try to have a good nichts sleep
(=If you are about to go on...)

10. If được dùng khá phổ biến với một số từ như " any/ anything/ever/ not " diễn đạt ý phủ định
Ví dụ: I'm not angry. If anything, I feel a little surprised.
I'd say he was more like a father, if anything
He seldom if ever travel abroard.
Usually, if not always,we write "cannot" as one word.

Ví dụ: His style, if simple, is pleasant to read.
, but
